The Other World. Empty The Other World.

Post by EphPhoenix 9th November 2014, 1:50 pm

It was a chill autumn in the large town of Emberville. A cool breeze had been sweeping through the town all week, but the chill that seemed to be settling into their bones seemed colder, deeper.

Crime, small in the town up to now, had seemed to increase exponentially in the last month. For every one that the police thwarted, two more happened in its place. Mysterious happenings were prevalent all the time, now: strange disappearances, bodiless voices, walls painted in blood smears, hideous screams, men in robes. The place seemed to be becoming a real hell on Earth.

In Emberville High, a young boy sat in class, looking out the window. His look was far off, but not in the dreamy, fun way. Quite the contrary, he seemed to have the weight of the world on his shoulders.

"Joseph? I'm sure the outside world is interesting, but perhaps--"

"'A' over sine alpha is equal to b over sine beta," Joseph said without looking away from the window. "I'm listening, Ms. Wimberly."

"Oh. Um...okay," his teacher said, surprise showing on her features as she awkwardly got back into the lesson.

"Uber-nerd..."

Joseph listened with only half a mind. Well, truth to tell, since this all started, he didn't have to listen with any mind. It was always there, downloading his surroundings. It made things easier, allowed him to his thoughts, but...eh. He never struggled with his studies, it was convenient, but kind of needless. Or was it? He didn't know.

His town was getting worse and he had no idea why. He could feel a...darkness. But it was unfocused, seemingly unfocused, everywhere, but too light to pinpoint. But the evidence was evident. Why is this happening? I stopped the evil from taking root here...

He wished the Council hadn't been "disbanded." Since their silence, he was in the dark about so many things. As Airtasm, he had access to a plethora of supernatural knowledge, but there was so much to sift through, and it might as well have been useless. It was like putting in a search for something vague--so many hits to sift through. He sighed and inclined his head slightly to dodge the spitball Johnson blue at him. Okay, so maybe the enhanced presence had its uses. He heard the douchebag curse under his breath and grinned a bit. His first in days. He wished Serena was here.

Suddenly, the world seemed to slow. He sighed and got to his feet. He knew spirit time when he felt it. There, at the front of the room, an apparition. A little girl. She looked at him sadly, her mouth moving but no sound coming out, then she was gone.

"Joseph? Joseph? Are you okay?"

He sighed again. Spirit time was over. The entire class was looking at him, Ms. Wimberly with concern. He shrugged and headed toward the door. "No, I'm not," he said. "Don't feel well, yadda, yadda, yadda."

He headed out the door...and off campus. School was a joke, and he was getting a feeling.

Goldenrod Heights: rustic city of yesteryear and neighbor to the world. Ever the bustling, tranquil metropolis, people carry on about their busy boom time lives as if the world outside of the city limits doesn't exist. Yet inside Kent-Rogers High, there is one more aware of the world outside. And she quietly taps the eraser of her pencil against her desk as she stares through the window into the sunny sky. "Scarlet!"

"Huh? Uh... y-yes, Ms. Yvonne?"

"Perhaps you can tell us the answer to the question I just asked?"

Scarlet blinks as the eyes in the room all fall upon her. "Uh...I'd like to buy a vowel," she says.

Snickers bounce around the room as Ms. Yvonne stares flatly at Scarlet. "In geometry, Ms. Day?" the aging teacher retorts.

"Is it x=5?" Scarlet says, beginning to drift away again.

Ms. Yvonne sighs. "Yes, Scarlet. It is x=5. I would appreciate it if you would have actually known the answer instead of guessing. It'd be nice if you'd join us back here on planet Earth."

"W-what? Earth. Third planet from the sun. 70 percent-"

"That's enough, Ms. Day."

When the bell rings, Scarlet springs up from her seat and nearly knocks everyone over on her way out, but she stops when Ms. Yvonne calls out to her. "Scarlet."

"Y-yes?"

"A word." Scarlet approaches the desk and Ms. Yvonne removes her glasses. "Scarlet, honestly, I don't understand, at all, what your problem is. You're clearly not focused. You're head's in the clouds. You never pay attention to a word I say and I've spoken with your other teachers. They all say the same things. The only time any teacher's seen you fully engaged in years was when you had some conversation with Mr. Wright about those silly little magazines."

"Comic books. They're called comic books. And they're not silly. Listen, I kinda have stuff I need to do, so-"

"Scarlet, hush. Now, you're teetering on a C-. I'm going to give you a chance to boost yourself a letter grade by bumping up the value of the next test for everyone. But you need to pay attention. It's fine to dream, but there's a time and place. All right?"

"Y-yes ma'am."

"Thank you. You may go."

Scarlet takes off like a bolt. Once she's outside, she finds herself in the alley near the school. "Let's go see if anyone needs some superhero help, today. SHA- wait. Wrong word. KRAKOW!" Suddenly young Scarlet is engulfed by a small explosion of bright light. She emerges a split second later, clad in a red and gold, hooded ensemble with a cape. Her feet hover inches above the ground. Then she blasts off into the city skyline.

As she soars through the city on this sunny afternoon, pedestrians look on. Some point and she waves, twirling in the air and doing a few flips. "Mommy, it's Vic'try Girl!" a child says, pointing and tugging on his mother's blouse.

"Yes, Billy, I see," the mother says, bending down to pick the child up.

Victory-Girl: a name that meant there'd be no need to fear... unless you were the bad guy. Then you might be lucky if punching was all she did. Many were wary that she might summon up any of her world-saving friends... namely the 300 foot robot.

As she races along, she sees someone speeding and police chasing after them. In a flash she levels out against the street, flying alongside the car. "Um... hi? Wanna pull over?"

"The brakes! I can't pull over! The breaks are shot!"

"Oh. Okay," V says. She flies ahead of the car and lands in the street in front of it before taking a deep breath and exhaling a gust that slows the car to an eventual halt.

Shaken, the driver gets out of the car. "Th-thank you. Thank you so much."

"Ayup. S'what I'm here for. Want me to drop off your car at the nearest shop?"

"No. You don't have to do that. I can take this from here."

"All right. Drive safe," V says with a mock salute. Then she turns and runs off down the street, kicking up dust behind her as she accelerate until she takes a leap and rockets off into the city like a plane.

Sixth and Drexler. He stood at the intersection looking around, trying to get a feel for whatever it was he was sensing. It was definitely here.

It was in an area of old downtown. The buildings were showing their age, but a few gems lie here and there. Bill Q's barbecue to name one. The building looked like trash, but inside, the place was alive with culture, music, and a lifetime or ten of history from some famous musicians.

He couldn't help but feel a little depressed. People were dying with an increased frequency. He's already led five souls to the hereafter before their time. It had to stop, but he didn't have a clue how.

He felt a sudden spike again and looked on down the street. "Oh...if the Council could see me now..."

Up ahead, a local gang was harassing a local shop. It was a distraction, but he'd welcome anything at this point...and he didn't want to have to lead any more souls to the beyond.

As V soars through the city, she takes note of a silhouette standing on a nearby rooftop in a black trench coat, fedora, and white mask. She yields to an eventual stop in mid flight and drifts to the man, stopping before the man and hovering just opposite him, as if standing on air. "Stranger! Long time no see! Gi'me five!"

Stranger reaches into his pocket and removes a tape recorder. "Something bad is on the horizon. I believe you might be able to do something about it."

V-Girl stares at Stranger for a moment then lowers her hand and crosses her arms. "Me? Not Jet Jockette or Cap or Titano?"

"You weren't my first choice, no. Jet is off in the middle of retrieving a powerful relic from a cult. The Captain and Juniper are off world. And I decided calling on the help of a 300 foot robot might incite panic. You were the next logical choice: a walking atomic bomb with a filter, an unthreatening appearance, and no life beyond your school walls."

"Ya really know how to flatter a girl, Stranger," V-Girl says.

Stranger hands Victory-Girl the charm from around his neck. "This should allow you to see earthbound spirits. I've been investigating a problem arising in a town not far from here: Emberville."

"Oh, I know that place. We played 'em a while ago. Totally won."

"Scarlet, focus," Stranger says.

V ponder to herself for a moment. "Oh, but wait! If I'm gone, who'll look out for Goldenrod?" Suddenly she grabs Stranger by the arms. "Hey, can you do it? Pleeeaase!"

"All right!" Stranger says, dusting himself off as V lets him go. "Head to Emberville. I have another charm. As long as you have that one, you can contact me. Fill me in, ask questions-"

"On my way!" V says, turning and racing off towards Emberville.

Stranger watches her disappear.

"Hoo boy."

"Where'd that little punk run off to?!"

"This way! Down this alley!"

"What the hell?! Where'd all this mist come from?!"

The bangers had all given chase after Joseph had flicked one of them upside the head with a rock. From there it had been a merry chase into some back alleyways until they found themselves shrouded in mist and sudden darkness. Each could no longer see the rest of their "boys."

"Julius Greene..."

The young man turned every which way as the booming voice spoke, seeming to come from everywhere and nowhere at the same time. Names were one of the easiest things. To Death, no name was hidden.

"Julius Greene..." the voice intoned again.

"W-who's there?! Show yourself!"

He pulled out a gun, pointing it every which way. A cold breeze seemed to stir and he shot off in its direction, hand shaking as he got progressively more nervous.

"Julius Greene...death has come for thee."

"Kiss my ass!" he shouted defiantly, shooting every which direction wildly. "Show yourself, you cowardly $#*@!"

Ethereal eyes stared out from the darkness and he shrieked, breaking into a cold sweat despite the cold that seemed to seep into his bones. He shot until the clip emptied, then threw the gun at the silhouette that had appeared.

"Your sins exact a heavy judgement for you to see..." the voice intoned.

"What the *@3$ are you?!" he roared angrily.

The area went black and his eyes went wild with fear as the sight beyond him revealed itself. Unending torment, creatures of fire, demons whipping and beating people as they screamed in agony. And beyond that he saw himself, being shot up again and again, begging for mercy, begging for the pain to end.

He fell to his knees, hands gripping his face in disbelief. "No...no...no...! This can't be real...! This can't be...!"

"Question not the veracity," intoned the voice, "for this shall result from your present tenacity. Are you prepared, now, you presumptuous tool, to go the land of fire's spool?"

"N-no! Please! Please! I...I can't die! I can't be dead! I can't...go here...!"

"Then remember these visions that have been brought, for this is your fate, your sinner's lot."

The ghoulish figure walked toward him, growing larger and larger. The young man screamed as the figure became mist as he walked through him, and he was falling, falling, falling into nothingness...

The mist lifted, and a group of gangbangers all lie on the ground curled in the fetal position, whimpering and crying. Joseph walked out of the alley, a grim expression on his face. He hoped for their sakes that they might turn over a new leaf, for what they'd seen were where their souls were heading at present course.

Under an hour after the atomic teen's departure, a sonic boom sounds off high up over Emberville as Victory-Girl arcs in the air and descends upon the town. She yields on a dime, hovering just over an empty street. "No muss, no fuss," she says. She holds the charm that Stranger had given her and throws it around her neck. "Convenient. It lets you see ghosts and accessorize like no one's business! Hm... now who're the ghosts? I guess I could go around trying to pinch everyone. Oh! Maybe if I listen real hard, I can tell who has a heartbeat and who doesn't."

V floats off over the town, scanning for every ghost she can single out. "Okay, it's working... now what?"

"Scarlet."

"Huh? Who said that? Who's 'ere?"

V looks down at the charm lighting up in sync with the disembodied voice. "It's Stranger. You need to pay attention. You left before I could tell you what you were supposed to be looking for."

"Whoops."

"Nevermind that right now. You need to change back into Scarlet Day. If people see you, they might panic."

"But you said Titano-"

"Is a 300 foot robot and there's nothing he can do about it. You're a walking bomb who attracts aliens and things have a tendency of exploding around you. But you can at least exercise stealth by-"

"All right, all right," V says.

Victory-Girl lands behind a mini-mart and looks around to be certain no one's in the area, taking a quick scan with her super senses. Then she sighs. "Krakow!" Suddenly she explodes, violently throwing anything not bolted down. When it clears, Scarlet Day emerges, touching down on the ground beneath where she'd once been floating. She runs off and just as she disappears around a corner, the clerk of the mini-mart steps outside to figure out what on earth the sound was.

Scarlet strolls around in the city, now completely uncertain as to who the ghosts were and who the real ones were, save for occasionally walking through someone but opting not to acknowledge it.

"Psst! Hey, kid!"

Joseph turned. A ghost in a suit and fedora was waving his hand over. He followed after the ghost down the alley.

"Figured you didn't want the jive turkeys thinking you were loopy," he said.

"Thanks..." Joseph said. Jive turkey? What era was this guy from. "Wait. You know you're dead?"

"Of course," the man said with pride. "And I don't need you getting me to try and move on, Death Angel, I still have unfinished business."

"You...know what I am...?"

"Of course. Been around the block a few times. That fog show you pulled on them young punks didn't hurt, either. 'Course, you're the first living one I've met. Sure there's an interesting story there, but we don't have time for that, now.

"Name's Benji Thompson and you've got a big problem, kid. Children are getting taken. Mostly orphans and the foster types, those as won't be missed. Some powerful mojo is getting cooked up and these kids are the ingredients."

"How do you know?"

"Seen it, a'course. Damn bastards. Couldn't do a thing to save'em." He looked pained. "So I've been following, seeing where they're headed. Tried to invade the dreams of cops, but...no go. But now I've got something better: you. Angel cop. Yeah, I know what you guys moonlight on the side as. So, ya in?"

Joseph nodded. "Yeah, lead on."

"You're looking for any clues you can find pertaining to an outbreak of missing children. I've been investigating this for a while, but everything points to conflicts between otherworldly powers that I can't compete with."

Scarlet rounds a corner, getting a few sideways looks, probably regarding her 50s-ish style of dress. "And I can?" she says, ignoring passersby.

"Your powers are supernatural. You stand a better chance than myself."

Scarlet stops and looks into a store window at a few TVs looking back at her. "So where'd ya get the charm?"

"I have my sources."

Joseph was led down several blocks, stopping for a moment to note a girl that looked his age. "She one?"

"That's one of the living, ya mook," Benji replied. "Though she looks liked she'd fit right in a decade or two before my time."

"Okay," he said. It was odd, though, the girl gave off vibes of the dead. Something to ponder later. He followed Benji onward.

Scarlet stands upright a moment when she turns and notes a man walking with the boy who'd just strolled by. He hadn't appeared on any of the television screens in the window. "Hm..." She turns and follows, casually strolling down the street not far behind them but off at an angle. The man's reflection isn't showing up in any of the windows, but he's walking and talking with the boy. "Aha." Scarlet dips into the candy store that comes up on her left. "I've seen enough old vampire films to know that ain't normal."

She heads for the back entrance and sneaks out that way. Moments later the sound of a small blast, like a lightning strike, ripples through the air. "Stranger, I think I'm about to crack the case," Victory-Girl says as the blast and smoke clears away.

"Now I'm worried."

Victory-Girl begins to hover in the alley. "Big tickle. Relax, will ya? You'll be on cloud nine when I'm through."

"Really worried."

"How cliche can you get...?"

Joseph stood before a dilapidated old warehouse, looking with a flat expression. Couldn't evil be a bit less obvious?

"It would be if that were the place," Benji commented. "Look behind it."

His eyes looked up to see a ritzy hotel off in the distance. His expression didn't change. "Why does evil have to have a better bank account...?"

"Sheesh. There's no pleasing you, is there?"

"We're dealing with child trafficking of the worst order. No. There is no pleasing me at this point."

"...fair point."

Cthulu Estates was the sign on the hotel as they approached it. Joseph slapped a hand to his forehead. "Really? Really?! Evil's just not trying to hide itself, anymore!"

Benji folded his arms. "It doesn't have to," he commented wryly. "Everyone's free to worship it openly now without judgement. This modern generation and its 'political correctness.'"

"I don't write the laws nor do I do the protests, point it somewhere else."

"Where's your civil spirit, kid?"

"I walked it to the hereafter."

"Cute."

Joseph began walking forward, but Benji didn't. "Not coming?" Joseph asked with a raised eyebrow.

"As far as I can go, kid," he said. "Some kinda barrier keeps any random spirit from entering."

"...or from leaving..." Joseph's countenance became grim with that sobering thought. "Thanks for the help," he said as he turned and headed in.

"Hey, no problem! Just punch those mooks in the throat for me."

"Oh, I'll do more than that before I'm done..."

Through the window, V-Girl could see kids in several of the rooms, some quietly watching television, others playing. At one window, a little girl was staring at the window, looking at her with awe. The little girl smiled, then waved. She turned suddenly, looking and speaking to someone behind her. When she turned back around, her eyes were glowing yellow and her smile no longer sweet.

In several of the other windows, the kids' faces had distorted into hideous, dark caricatures of themselves. They began filing out and leaving their rooms.

"Okay. That is definitely tipping the scale on my Weird Stuff-o-Meter. Stranger, I, uh... I think I found what you were looking for," V-Girl says.

"That doesn't sound like a celebration."

V-Girl peers back through the window and winces. "No. No it doesn't, does it? On a scale of one to ten, how bad does 'possessed' rate?"

"I hope that's a rhetorical question."

"They're all holed up in this ritzy looking hotel. But they all just up and went somewhere else deeper in the place. Hang on. I'm gonna see if I can get inside without any problems."

The Other World. Empty Re: The Other World.

Post by EphPhoenix 12th November 2014, 1:07 pm

Joseph had found a strange resistance at the entryway. A ward of some sort. Meant to repel spirits. If he'd gone in differently, he'd have likely had to exert a lot of energy to cross the barrier and alerted whatever lie inside to his presence like a bullhorn. As it was, he couldn't be sure he hadn't set their radar off, anyway.

He walked into the main lobby. It was deserted and eerily quiet. "What kind of place is this?" he said airily. "No service in the afternoon? You just lost a star."

The place was nicely furnished with expensive wood grain paneling and a large, expensive glass chandelier hanging overhead. "Insert cliche quip about questioning whether crime doesn't pay," he said ruefully.

He tried the elevators--and found they weren't responding. "Malfunctioning equipment," he commented, "I'm afraid my review is going the hurt their business." Or maybe not.

He looked to see there was a card slider. For everything. The doors, the staircase, all of it. "Two star demerit for the stairs," he commented. "What if there was a fire and they didn't have their cards? I mean, really. The Health Department will be hearing about this travesty!"

But how to get in further...? He could smash his way through, but...maybe not the best idea, right now. A certain degree of stealth and caution was in order. Besides...it was more fun that way. He grimaced at himself. Yes. Cause in the midst of kidnapped and possibly tortured children it has to be fun... He pondered on whether there was something wrong with him.

The front desk! He turned back to it. Places like this had cards lying about--or ones you could make. Let's see what he could see. He checked around again to make sure that there was no one around and ducked down, looking around to see if he could find his quarry.

"Scarlet, hold-"

V-Girl tries to simply float through the window but something pushes her back. "Huh?"

"What is it?"

"Some sort of invisible wall. Hang on." The atomic teen winds back and punches at the barrier but it refuses the budge. "Hm... maybe I can call in Tita-"

"No, Scarlet."

"I'm kidding, hard case," V-Girl says. She looks down and sees the boy from before entering the building through the front door. "I guess it's the front door, then."

"Be careful, Scarlet."

"Yes, mom," Scarlet says, floating down to the front of the building and hiding behind a bush out front.

One thunderous explosion later, Scarlet trots out from her hiding place and walks, casually, into the building through the front door. She looks around and crosses her arms. "Hm."

"Ow!"

Joseph had heard something, or someone, and jerked, bumping his head on the desk. He rubbed his head and looked up cautiously. There was a young girl in front of him. He blinked and looked suspiciously at her. It was the same girl he'd seen earlier on his way here, and that spiritual aura was pooling off of her, now.

"You work here?" he inquired as benignly as he could.

Scarlet looks around. The place, though mundane in appearance, has an ominous air to it. There don't appear to be any ghosts in this room, per the amulet. Even the one that'd been with the boy before is now gone. She perks up when she hears the thump and the following voice. Speaking of that boy--.

"Me? You're the one behind the desk," Scarlet says, tilting her head and folding her hands behind her back.

"Afraid not," he said. "Place has been deserted since I arrived. I was looking to see if the concierge had left a note--or a bell." He furtively hid the bell behind the counter. "And none of these doors seem to open without a key card, so I'm sure your sister isn't around here." He felt bad. He wanted to help her find her sister, but he needed to bust some evil. Scarlet stares into space for a moment. "No, I definitely saw her come in here and there's only one way in or out." She pokes around a bit. "I think I'll just check and make sure she isn't hiding or something. Unless there's some reason I shouldn't be in here. Looks pretty... spooky."

Joseph sighed. "Yes. It does," he agreed. "All the more reason to get out of here and after your sister. Bad things are happening in town lately, as you well know, so you might want to get on that." He slid the card in the reader to activate it and smiled satisfactorily. He was a regular James Bond.

He looked up at the girl. Now, he needed to be rid of her. "Well, doesn't look like anyone is around here, so I'll be seeing you later. Got things to do. Don't let the door hit you on your way out."
