Favorite Alignment(s)?

The roles below are only examples and simplifications of the alignments--they aren't the ONLY roles for those alignments, so don't limit your choice by these sample explanations.

Good Vs. Evil

Good characters and creatures protect innocent life. Evil characters or creatures debase or destroy innocent life, whether for fun or profit.

"Good" implies altruism, respect for life, and a concern for the dignity of sentient beings. Good characters make personal sacrifices to help others.

"Evil" implies hurting, oppressing, and killing others. Some evil creatures simply have no compassion for other creatures and kill without qualms if doing so is convenient. Others actively pursue evil, killing for sport or out of duty for some evil deity or master.

People who are neutral with respect to good or evil have compunctions against killing the innocent but lack the commitment to make sacrifices to help or protect others. Neutral people are committed to others by personal relationships.

Law Vs. Choas

Lawful characters tell the truth, keep their word, respect authority, honor tradition, and judge those that fall short of their duties. Chaotic characters follow their consciences, resent being told what to do, favor new ideas over tradition, and do what they promise if they feel like it.

"Law" implies honor, trustworthiness, obedience to authority, and reliability. On the downside, lawfulness can include close-mindedness, reactionary adherence to tradition, judgementalness, and a lack of adaptability.

"Chaos" implies freedom, adaptability, and flexibility. On the downside, chaos can include recklessness, resentment against legitimate authority, arbitrary actions, and irresponsibility.

The Nine Alignments

Lawful Good, "Crusader": A lawful good character acts as a good person is expected or required to act. She combines a commitment to oppose evil with the discipline to fight relentlessly. She tells the truth, keeps her word, helps those in need, and speaks out against injustice and hates to see the guilty go unpunished.

Neutral Good, "Benefactor": A neutral good character does the best that a good person can do. He is devoted to helping others. He works with Kings and magistrates but does not feel beholden to them.

Chaotic Good, "Rebel": A chaotic good character acts as his conscience directs him with little regard of what others expect of him. He makes is own way, but is kind and benevolent. He believes in goodness and right, but has little use for laws and regulations. He hates it when people try to intimidate others and tell them what to do. He follows his own moral compass, which although is good, may not agree with the morals of society.

Lawful Neutral, "Judge": A lawful neutral character acts as law, tradition, or a personal code directs her. Order and Organization are paramount to her. She may believe in personal order and live by a code or standard, or she may believe in an order for all, and favor a strong, organized government.

Neutral, "Undecided": A lawful neutral character does what seems to be a good idea. She doesn't feel strongly one way or the other when it comes to law vs. chaos or evil vs. good. Most neutral characters exhibit a lack of conviction or bias, rather than a commitment to neutrality. Such characters think of good as better than evil--after all, she would rather have good neighbors and rulers than evil ones.

Chaotic Neutral, "Free Spirit": A chaotic neutral character follows his whims. He is an individualist first and last. He values his own liberty but doesn't strive to protect others' freedom. He avoids authority, resents restrictions, and challenges traditions. His actions may be unpredictable, but his actions are not random.

Lawful Evil, "Dominator": A lawful evil villain methodically takes what he wants within the limits of his code of conduct without regard of whom it hurts. He cares about tradition, loyalty, and order, but not about freedom, dignity, or life. He plays by the rules but without mercy or compassion. He prefers to rule, but is willing to serve and condemns others not according to their actions, but to their race, religion, homeland, or social rank. He is loath to break laws or promises.

Neutral Evil, "Malefactor": A neutral evil villain does whatever she can get away with. She is out for herself, pure and simple. She sheds no tears for those she kills, whether for sport, profit, or convenience. She holds no love of order and holds no illusion that following laws, traditions, or codes would make her any better or more noble.

Chaotic Evil, "Destroyer": A chaotic evil character does whatever his greed, hatred, and lust for destruction drive him to do. He is hot-tempered, vicious, arbitrarily violent, and unpredictable. If he is out for simply whatever he can get, he is ruthless and brutal. If he is committed to the spread of evil and chaos, he is even worse. Thankfully, his plans are haphazard, and any groups he joins or forms are poorly organized.

I chose:

Chaotic Good, Chaotic Evil, & Chaotic Neutral

These characters are so easy to use because you don't have to really have a reason why you do some things or why you break certain rules. They are about freedom and unpredictability, which is always fun to use. If I had to pick one out of those three, I'd go with Chaotic Neutral, just because then you can have a little of both good an evil in your character play.

I'm going with Lawful axis on this one. I tend to like playing order type chara's. It's something about the structure, traditions, and over all general attitude that suits me well. Then again if anyone has gotten a questionnaire from me, then this isn't really a surprise. In general I enjoy playing good people over evil, but hey who doesn't enjoy taking the evil jerkwad route once in awhile in games and just venting out?

UGH this is so hard. Most of my character are neutral good, or chaotic good. But they are dynamic too. So they aren't stringent in those roles.

I basically picked a few but the ones I'll explain are Chaotic Good and Lawful Good. Specifically, I tend to make characters that are an amalgam of these two. I like the characters who embody righteousness and wholesomeness and stand for higher ideals, and blah blah blah. Look no further than my favorite superhero. But I also don't like the idea of them being slaves to their governing order of their alignment. I want them to be able to think and act on their own when necessary. Again, see my favorite superhero. They simply stand for what is right and it needn't be any more complicated than that to me.

And in that regard, I just as evenly like playing one side or the other of that coin. Jazz in Umbrella is the amalgam type. Wild-Child is the CG type. And prior to coming into her own, Silk is a very LG type.

Then there are the lawful villains. Flawed though Man of Steel may have been, General Zod happens to be the best example for me and I have quite a few villains, myself, who fit this billing. I kind of like the villains who have that whole idea of "Why won't you understand what I'm trying to tell you?" You know, the villains who think they're doing the right thing.

I really don't think I have a favourite alignment. XD I guess I tend to use chaotic good a fair bit, but at the same time I'm having a blast using a lawful good paladin. Neutral can be fun too and although I rarely have evil characters I know I would enjoy it too.

Basically, if you stick too rigidly to the definition of the alignments it won't be fun, but if you just keep it as a guideline and let the character flow then any alignment can be enjoyable.

As I have told many people when discussing alignments, there is no strict limitations of alignments from their definition. The alignments are defined so as to help people better understand them, but they are in no way a limitation or an exact definition of what they are and how they should be played. They are meant only as a guideline and only one's creativity can limit their use of an alignment, as one shouldn't stick to the samples of an alignment at all. All alignments and personalities vary from alignment to alignment and within each alignment.

I have to say, however, my worst experience with an alignment has been with the Lawful Good--don't get me wrong, it's a great alignment. But most people in real life that I have dealt with play some mean, Lawful Good characters. lol Being Lawful Good doesn't mean being nice--which was my first assumption of the alignment when I was new to role-play all together. I know much better than that, now. XD

Yeah, no. Lawful good alone seldom means you need to be nice. I used to make that mistake too. XD

I went with the axis of Good alignments. And the other two Chaotics; Neutral and Evil.

Anyone that knows me will know that I tend to stick to Good alignments for my main characters. Even if they are a dark person or an anti-hero they still have that core of goodness to them that stays their hands from fully going onto another path.
If I do play villains then Chaotic ones tend to be more my taste at being unpredictable. Let alone I tend to give them that mental instability edge which makes them self-destructive and maniacal.
I love vagabonds and travelers who live abroad just to see the world and touch all horizons past all frontiers. Chaotic Neutral is a good fit for this type. They don't worry about good or evil. It usually just comes to survival to see the next great thing they are searching for.

Good has such a comforting blanket of people. They are what they need to be. Whether it is the lone good Samaritan, the staunch slayer of evil, the purveyor of healing and helping, the mystic who keeps the worst things at bay, or a simple person who wants others to be happy and healthy.

Chaotic Neutral has no real limitations, even of himself/herself. They change with the currents of life and can adapt much easier than other alignments so long as nothing is forced on them.

Chaotic Evil are the dire conflicts; the forces to be reckoned with. Lawful might have a better plan, and might even have more chance at success, but Chaotic Evil doesn't give a crap; it burns hot and bright. These can be the villains who left a mark on all of history for their terrible onslaught. Or maybe they are the ones who bring on the unraveling of whole societies and civilizations by tearing apart everything that was built and challenging everyone to band together to stop their swath of destruction or perish in it.
