The Occularum Registration

Things To Note:

• In this roleplay you can create multiple characters though the 'limit' is three and a singular character serves just as well.
  
• Any questions, complaints or ideas can be shot at me in Discord.
  
• While the setting is primarily in London in the late 1800's it does not strictly adhere to the social climate, level of technology and it does not possess 100% historical accuracy. I sincerely doubt there were werewolves running around London streets so liberties can and will be taken; it would be more accurate to describe the scenario as 'steampunk lite' than anything else.
  
• If you wish to have your characters know any major NPC's of mine or have a specific backstory that would effect the world set up please, message me so I know and can include it.

Name: Baron Baelor Devorak

Age: 29

Gender: Male

Appearance: 6'4, muscular, with wild, curly hair and dark skin. Alistair casts an intimidating image; or he would, if it were not for his perpetually jovial disposition.

Occupation: Agent of the Occularum, Baron of the Devorak estate.

Magical Ability: 'Magical Lycanthropy'. Baelor possesses super strength, agility, and a the ability to transform himself into a golden lycanthropic beast. Rather strikingly different than normal lycanthropy, those in The Occularum have still taken to comparing it to such, due to his wolf like form.

The ability manifested a few years ago; though no one actually knows the cause.

Native Country: A small province in rural England, few even know of its name.

Skills/Talents: An avid drinker, storyteller, and brawler. Baelor is a man who loves to enjoy himself. He is never one to deny himself lifes pleasures, and will invest most of his time and energy into seeking them. He is a man of many talents, having trained in music and the sciences from an early age. A well read man, despite his dedication to hobbies some would deem 'unsuitable' for a man of his standing, he speaks eloquently and politely; and allows his manners and deeds to speak for themselves.

Hobbies/Interests: Reading, wooing, entertaining and drinking. Baelor dips his fingers into any hobby he lays eyes on, if only for a little while. He is a fan of traveling, always first to volunteer for The Occularum's globe trotting tasks, and a lover of animals.

Background: Little is known about Baelor's past; as a Baron of a rural, little known estate- seldom was heard of him. It wasn't until he came into the company of Lady Ophelia Vandellum and her merry band of spiritualists that anyone had even deigned to look into his name. No records held anything of him outside of his birth and some of his lineage, and those who attempted to research the land which he governed found themselves on the runaround. Baelor is happy to speak about himself; but will refrain from noting his own birthright unless specifically grilled. Even then, those he tells will find it hard to recall any of what he told them...

Name: Sir Elias Veglebud

Age: Appears to be 13

Gender: Male

Appearance: A slight boy, with golden hair and almost unnerving, soft, golden eyes. Elias has fair skin and a rather muted expression at almost all times. He is short, as is expected of his age, but holds himself with a maturity unexpected of him. He dresses in clothing that would befit an older gentleman, perfectly tailored, and leaning towards darker colors.

Occupation: Agent of the Occularum.

Magical Ability: Soul Dissonance: Elias' 'spirit' removes itself from his body, capable of combating and setting itself at war with other spirits or paranormal forces. His spirit holds a tremendous amount of power, capable of inciting shifts in the weather, as well as power outages. He is capable of tearing ones spirit away from their body, and expunging demonic forces from peoples essences. This power, however, leaves Elias' body vulnerable- and if anything were to happen to it he would be stuck in his limbo state, presumably forever.

Skills/Talents: A skilled writer and musician, those who come across Elias describe him as a prodigy; though he insists he is now such thing. He is adept at handling people, and shifting them to get his way.

Hobbies/Interests: He can often be found sleeping within the Vandellum parlor; he is fond of walks and daytime ventures with Baron Devorak.

Background: Little is known about Elias's past- but what is known is how he came to be in his current form. As a young boy, Elias found himself torn from the world- killed- by means he has refused to specify to this day. Only instead of moving on to the afterlife- his soul remained in limbo- for years. Decades past, and his soul remained unwavering, walking amidst the world of men as a silent observer. Most spirits that remain in limbo even for a few months in some ways rot, decay, twist. But Elias' didn't. It learned, it adapted, it tried to reach out beyond the veil, only to be struck away.

Until he came across Aurellia- a being from a world beyond, trapped on the earthly plane; who attempted to use him as a vessel to free herself. Luckily for Elias, he was far too crafty for her wiles.

He ensared her himself, learning her one weakness, and shackling her with it- he used her as the envoy of his return, gaining whispers of her magic to bolster his own. He now serves Lady Ophelia, and The Occularum, in all ways that he can.

Name:Lady Ophelia Vandellum

Appearance: Tall, willowy, with pale skin and dark eyes; Ophelia possesses a strange allure that comes from her connection to the spiritual world.

Occupation: Spiritualist, Founder of The Occularum

Magical Ability: Spirit Magic/Spirit Communion: Ophelia possesses the ability to commune with spirits and the dead, feeling and moving through their auras and energy to reach through to them. She can likewise see the auras and energies of the living, though is unable to commune with them in the same sense. She possesses magic that allows her to manipulate and use spirits and spirit energy to combat evil entities at will, though mainly relies on Elias for spiritual combat.

Skills/Talents: A painter, spiritualist, and socialite, Lady Ophelia fits right in in the aristocratic social climate of London.

Hobbies/Interests: Divination and reading, social evenings and salons, evenings spent taking tea with Elias and story-telling with Baelor.

Background: Born to a famous spiritualist, Ophelia spent her younger years unknowing that her strange friends were, in fact, spirits of the deceased. Once her father found out about her 'night time visitors' he began training her in how to harness her power.

She was attentive, wanting to help the poor souls trapped within 'limbo' as her father called it; though, throughout the years, became acutely aware of the fact that she could not save them all.

He flew through her lessons with flying colors, until one day her father vanished, without a trace, after a call he was set upon in the rural countryside. No one had heard from him, seen him; he was gone without a trace. Luckily, Ophelia was more than capable of handling herself; and set about gathering people like herself under one roof, so that none like her father would ever go missing again.

Name: Briar Josephine Luella Sophronia Aldonis VII

Occupation: Latin Teacher, English Teacher

Magical Ability: Arcane Sensory -- Ever since she can remember, Briar has been able to sense or feel when a spirit is nearby, as well as detect their emotions and overall feelings. Although she cannot hear them, speak with them, or communicate in other ways, she can see them at times when they are hostile to her or an ally and when they want to be seen.

Additionally, she is able to sometimes answer questions given to her or questions that are thought of around her with certainty--questions of the future that just come to her at random moments for unknown reasons and with little to no understanding. Words of answers generally come pouring from her lips to people around her with no explanation.

Emotion detection can be from both the living and the undead, and she can always tell the difference between the emotions of one who is alive and one who is not. Briar can also alter emotions to the point of changing them, increasing them, or decreasing them--but these take a lot of concentration and although the effect is immediate, the drawbacks on her are not and she will pay later, depending on the level of mood change she is making.

However, these abilities do drain her and if they are used too frequently or at higher levels during a shorter period of time, she experiences headaches, dizzy spells, lack of balance, and nosebleeds.

Background: The Aldonis family is an old one that has carried on within London for centuries with great repute and even greater wealth. At first, the wealth originated from bounty hunting--no one could deny that the oldest well known Aldonis brothers were some of the greatest criminal catchers of their time. As time went by, they went from bounty hunting to ghost hunting and then into simple coffee creations with a hunter here or there with odds and ends of how they worked.

Still, the family remained successful in its various ventures of business and maintained and overall good standing, albeit mostly with the fantastic coffee blends within the newest generations. Unfortunately, the sole heir to the estate, Briar Aldonis VI, was an only child that was not only slow to wed with the hopes of continuing the family name, but later learned that she was barren. This very fact made it clear that the Aldonis family would not continue.

It was not long before Briar and Silas, her loving and doting husband, had come to terms with this fact. They loved each other and one day, that would be enough. However, several years later, a small infant was found--a year or two of age?--abandoned in an alleyway within piles of litter. They immediately took her home and Briar VII was adopted into the family.

Briar was only around six years of age when she started having headaches, complaints of people "lying" about their dislike or hatred of her or her family, and other such minor disputes. She caused troubles within the schools up until the point where she had to be pulled out for private schooling, instead. At home, she was taught Geography, Literature, History, Embroidery--everything that a young English Lady should know.

It wasn't until she was much older that her abilities manifested to their fuller forms and she was better able to understand them. It made her many friends--as well as a lot of enemies. Sometimes, those abilities still cause trouble and social turmoil, which limits her ability to have many friends or fun out in public. As such, she has become a bit shy and nervous around new people, as so few in the newer generations truly understand her. Then again, she doesn't truly understand herself and often wonders who she is, where she came from--and even, what she is, because sometimes, she doesn't even feel human.

Magical Ability: Ethereal Grasp -- When Clara was 12, she was learning the sword with the ferocity and the eagerness of a soldier at war. Her power manifested when a spirit of old had appeared before her, frightening her and her uncle with its sudden shriek. As a reaction, Clara was quick to anger and as her sword struck home, the blade of her sword emanated with a golden light that shifted into translucent blur.

With much practice over the years, she learned to activate and deactivate her blade-power at will. This very power drains at her energy, often afterwards making her eat much more than the average person when it is used and sleep much longer, as well.

Background: Clara is a simple girl with simple tastes. She likes good food, good drinks, and a roof over her head. At least--that's how she was for the longest time. However, as a lone tomboy in America that despised all that it meant to be a lady or to become ladylike, she rebelled her society and made it quick to her uncle's home to learn how to fight.

At first, the lout wouldn't teach her, but it was soon discovered that as a lady--Clara was simply a lost cause. Her mouth is too foul, her body language to casual, and her mind too brash. Clara met the Aldonis family after years of training with the man--happy to be proficient as a soldier that stood out to the English couple like no other.

They were not only shocked at this simpleton girl wearing her boyish clothing, taking part in a man's duties throughout her town and home, but they were also impressed. Her defiance of nature, her self-confidence, all of the way she held herself was something that Briar herself came to love. Realizing the opportunity before her, she hired Clara on as both her lady-in-waiting, as well as her bodyguard.

With this means, the woman could be with her at all times, keeping her safe and doing it while taking the attention away from her daughter's own oddities--something that they desperately needed at the time. In this, Clara never failed due to her incredibly strange outfit choices, her incredibly strange behavior, and her incredibly large ego accompanied with her fancy outfit add-ons due to her "fancy paycheck." The friendship and bond between Clara and the three members of the Aldonis family began with an understanding of shared strangeness.

Name: Jonathan "Yami" Harwood

Age: 26

Appearance: 5'8 with short dark hair, bright blue eyes and pale, almost sickly looking skin.

Occupation: Mob Boss

Magical Ability: Yami can summon magical binds that he can use to attack another, or to defend his own. Though using these binds for anything more than a short period of time he will start to experience physical pain, which intensifies the longer he uses them. He also has the ability to dash short distances at a time, with this taking a toll on his energy.

Yami has had these abilities ever since a mysterious incident that happened in his youth. With only him and a few others making it out, having been touched by magic.

Skills/Talents: Having grown up on the streets Yami has adopted a very particular skill set, the kind that includes things like lock picking and pick pocketing, theft and deception, and extensive experience in hand to hand combat.

Hobbies/Interests: There are very few things that Yami spends his spare time doing. He likes to drink. He likes to fight. And he likes to investigate any supernatural activity he catches wind of. Above anything else he serches for answers as to what this power that has fallen into his hands is.

Background: At a young age Yami was abandoned by his parents and forced to live on the street. He ended up forming a group of other young boys who have fallen into similar situations around him. These boys had to work together to survive on the streets and eventually became very close to one another. It was in their youth that the mysterious incident tore them apart. No one knows what happened that day, all that is know is that only a handful of the boys survived, and those who did were touched by magic. Over time all of the survivors were picked off one by one, except Yami. Due to his intelligence and the potency of his new found abilities he has managed to not only survive, but make something of himself. He has spent the decade since the incident looking into supernatural activity whenever the opportunity presented itself and making a name for himself in Londons thriving crime world, he eventually acquired a pub of his own for him and his men to work out of.

Name: Cassius Silas Van Graves

Appearance:  5'8 Tall, Brown Hair, Grey Eyes

Cassius:

Occupation: Crematorior & Grave Digger for the Van Graves Funeral & Graveyard; Agent of the Occularum

Magical Ability: Ashes to Ashes -- Upon touching any corpse, regardless of its level of decay, it will immediately turn to dust/ash, where it can magically be funneled into any container desired out of respect for the dead.  This process purifies the soul, releasing it and aiding the path to the afterlife in peace.  More specific for this ability, Cassius has the capability of moving ashes, regardless of the source, with his mind as though it were shifted along by a swift but gentle wind.  This could be used to throw ashes into an opponent's eyes, if he wished.

He's had this ability ever since he was ten and it was discovered upon his uncle's death when he had tried to hold his father's embalmed form at the funeral in grief.  Needless to say, the funeral did not go as planned, but the situation was resolved and the ability was eventually looked upon favorably, considering its usefulness to the family business.

Flesh to Smoke --  Cassius can make black smoke appear around him to hide his immediate position or around others--this smoke can blend perfectly into shadows and darkness when the light levels allow for it.  Additionally, he can shift his own body into smoke and move from shadow to shadow and in and out of view with it, fading in and and out of eyesight without making a sound.  When he is in his smokey form, he cannot be harmed by physical weapons or attacks.  Lastly, his smoke blinds ghosts/spirits and makes them visible to the normal human eye.

This ability was discovered when Cassius was sixteen years old--by then, his two younger half-sisters had this ability on their own and used it frequently.  He did not expect to share the gift, and when he had jumped to hide from his parents after breaking a family rule, he accidentally shifted into his smoke form for the first time.  Thanks to his sisters, he has grown to excel at creating and manipulating the family's black smoke.

Background: Cassius grew up within the Van Graves family with strict expectations--as the oldest child within his generation, he has always been expected to continue on the family business once his parents have passed away. These expectations, of course, were only worsened upon the discovery of his magical ability, as though the manifestation of the ability was simply fate's own personal message to his father that Cass was simply "meant" to be the one to carry this responsibility.

Despite all of this, Cassius has dealt with this burden well, even though his passion has always fallen in with both acting and dance. He loves both of them with all of his heart and having the family business on his shoulders has always felt like his youth was just slowly being sapped from him. His two younger sisters, both of which have far more freedom than he, are doting, but teasing in their freedoms--but they have never had to see the darker side of their father as he has.

At the age of 16, Cassius applied to the Occularum and was, after a time, accepted. His father didn't mind, so long as he remembered that this was a "side job" and to be "secondary only." Due to this, Cass spent many weeks at home and at the Occularum, juggling his responsibilities with care and doing his best as a field agent to keep his passions of acting and dance will affordable as hobbies on the smaller parts of his free time. His first three years spent as an agent were his happiest, making friends and getting closer to the other agents that he worked with.

However, when Cass was 19, he came home one night very quiet and very different. He acted strangely and differently for several months and his entire family noticed it. He had taken time off of the Occularum, focusing solely on the family business for a while before returning back to the side job and although they asked many times, Cassius assured his family that he was just "fine." Of course, it wasn't too long after his return to the Occularum that is mood eventually lifted up once more and he managed to invite the agents that he worked with over to a family dinner with the Van Graves--a request that was insisted upon by his father.

Ever since that...eventful evening, Cassius has remained an agent with his father's blessing (miraculously) and Cass felt as though he could breathe again. It took time, but his spirit of determination and strong desires to help others, as well as hope for the living returned and his darker depression faded into the past.

Name: Deverim Suresh

Age: 28

Gender: Male

Appearance: 6'1, Deverim is of average build with dark, dusky skin and tousled black hair and brown eyes. He possesses a friendly face and is usually seen in business attire.

Occupation: Secretary, Accountant, Agent Of The Occularum

Residence: The Vandellum Estate

Native Country: India

Skills/Talents: A skilled mathematician and scholar, Deverim was once a business associate of Lady Ophelia, later turning to becoming her secretary and personal assistant. He handles most financial and mundane management manners of The Occularum. He is quite well versed in folk tales and urban legends. He is also a rather proficient cook.

Hobbies/Interests: Fascinated by the occult, Deverim's interest in the Occularum was further stoked by his friendship with Lady Ophelia. He enjoys studying wild animals, world history, and politics.

Background: Immigrating to London from India at a young age, Deverim was the child of rich, globe trotting parents who thought their son would thrive in London's busy streets. And he did; for a time. His business sense and people savvy earning him quite a high position in the business world. Alas, once he met Lady Ophelia, his social climb was all but over. Yes, he still maintained a high standing, but became far to engrossed in matters of the occult to climb the social ladder.

His parents frequently inquire as to why he has not yet married; he deflects such questions.

Name: Anatheme 'Ana'

Age: 24(?)

Gender: Female

Appearance: 5'9, Ana is whip thin with a wicked look about her. Her thin, lean muscle pulls in coils under thin, gaunt skin and her boyish figure allows people to occasionally mistake her for a young boy. She has short, scruffy red hair, shaved on one side to accommodate the sheer amount of tattoos inching up her body. Her teeth, her most distinguished feature, have been sharpened down to fine, shark like points- unnerving all who speak to her.

Occupation: Gang Member, Smuggler, Muscle For Hire

Native Country: Unknown, theorized to be Scotland

Skills/Talents: Anatheme is a terror on the high water, adept in sailing, fixing boats, and aquatic combat. Wicked with a blade, Anatheme distinguished herself in a culture that sought to expel her by being too ruthless to ignore.

Hobbies/Interests: Keen on Marine Biology, scaring 'rich tits', and drinking her fellow thugs under the table.

Background: Few know where Anatheme came from. Some theorized her to be the bastard of a sea hag, washed up on the shores of London; those few quickly retracted their theory. She has proven herself to be a loyal member of The Nightcrawlers, and has shown no aversion to getting her hands and moral fiber dirty. She's outed a few dissenters, catching people in the back before they can rat on any of 'her' own. Despite her loyalty, there are many who still grow unnerved by her presence, and have trouble yet trusting her.
