Pitch Space Empty Pitch Space

Post by EphPhoenix 3rd September 2013, 1:55 am

The day was hot and scorching--the usual. The landscape was of bleak and craggy rock, heat haze rising up. The hydroponics bay solar collectors were already filtering the solar rays--solar energy here was 300% stronger than the Earth his elders had supposedly come from. He could see the workers already tending the plants. He smiled behind his visor; he liked plants.

The soldier ward was already in full swing, soldiers and new recruits going through drills and enlisted performing cleaning duties. It was always a well-oiled machine. He'd need to put a few hours in himself. He was on reserve tonight for the Dusk Hours. Speaking of...

He looked with longing toward the Hibernation Chambers. This was where gargoyles went for stone sleep. The sun was unfiltered. It allowed for swifter hibernation times. He'd been working twenty-four hours straight. Better hibernation=longer work schedules. He didn't mind, but it didn't always seem fair.

The Science Hall was buzzing, too, as usual. He smiled. His tech-band schematic was being studied and implemented. His rookery siblings had thrown a party for him. It had meant slimmer rations for the next week, but it had been worth it.

He took one more survey of the colony before resuming what he was out here for. The Manufactury was all abuzz, and the sanitation bots were busy recycling. The recreation hall was still being built--there would be extra security tonight for that.

It was a true wonder. They'd only begun being able to expand resource acquiring in the past and now they were actually starting to be able to expand the colony, allowing more personal freedom. The hydroponics bay was already being expanded, and with the new robo-workers, construction was going in record speed. It was a new world.

He looked back down at the open panel. It was a simple matrix retrofit. He'd been at it for the past thirty minutes. Nothing difficult, just tedious. He finished soldering the last two circuits and the nano alloy closed itself up. He nodded with approval, putting his tools away and tapping his tech-band. The holo-screen and keyboard appeared in front of him and he began typing, running diagnostics. The retrofit readings were coming back all clear. He stood up and began walking toward the hatch, the nano alloy mending the scratches his talons put in the metal.

Post by JerriLeah7 3rd September 2013, 6:57 pm

Jack makes a half-frown as the left corner of his lips fall on his face, scrubbing hard at the floor in the cooking area.  As his rag nears the area where the other, assistant cooks are, they life their feet one at a time as he scrubs the area clean as quickly as he can while they continue to make preparations.  He always did cleaning duty on Forthdays and he hated it, but he'd not ask his assistants to do something that he was not willing to do himself.

He looks up, squinting from the bright lights shining from above.  A dark, black haired girl bends down to give him a hand and help him stand.  He mutters a polite thank you as he brushes himself off and places the rag in the cleaning bins.  He feels awkward standing next to Beth, because of two reasons:

One, she's abnormally tall and muscular for a woman.  She's only a part-time cook help, since she's also a soldier, but she's 6'2 tall and she can definitely handle herself.  On Earth, she was considered African American, because of her skin color, but no one really made such distinctions here.  No one really cared.

The second reason, of course, is that he is thin and remarkably short for a man.  He's only 5'4 and that tends to get a giggle from newer ladies when they decide how "funny" that really is.  Generally, Jack doesn't really care about his size, of course, and he's not offended by the giggles of others, but standing next to Beth made him look smaller than small...and darn, it really is awkward.

He clears his throat, moving away from Beth as he points his finger at a chubby, creme skin-colored boy that is cutting up the carrots on the counter.  That's right--today is vegetable and fruit day--Jack has one at least once a month and it's quite popular in the evenings, considering fruits are especially harder to have in large quantities like he offers on these nights.

"Thinner, please.  When people want their carrots diced liek that, they want 'em thin.  We only make 'em large when we halve them."  Jack says, washing his hands.

"Jack, let the bots do the floor scrubbin'."  Beth cuts in before the boy can reply.  "We go' one, don' we?  At leas' one--"

"We've been over this a thousand times."  Jack says, cutting in rudely.  "No.  Not in a million years when I'm dead and gone and no one remembers me.  I don't trust 'em.  They can't clean it like a person can.  End of discussion.  Now get me the ham."

Pitch Space Empty Re: Pitch Space

Post by EphPhoenix 3rd September 2013, 9:13 pm

The doors to the decompression chamber hissed as they opened. Ragnarok stepped through, heading toward the locker room. He took off his helmet and got out of his suit, getting into his civvies.

He shook himself and yawned. The things were supposed to be like a second skin, but he always felt constricted. Well, his girth generally did make for special suits to be made.

He began heading for the Hibernation Chambers when his stomach rumbled loudly. Well. He didn't like to enter stone sleep hungry--he'd be even hungrier by the time he woke up. Time for a quick cafeteria run.

When was the last time I'd eaten...? he thought to himself. Twelve hours ago, maybe? Maybe more. He often got caught up in his work.

The corridors were relatively quiet--the full swing of the day had yet to begin. The quiet hum of the internal systems rang in his ears. He sometimes envied humans their less adept senses. At the same time, he found the sound soothing in its own way.

He looked out the windows, seeing the bleak landscape beyond the bubble. He grimaced. He could see light fluctuations in the bubble where it had taken damage. He grimaced; they were getting fiercer.

It had started of late in their recent bid to expand. The Folk had come out in a force larger than they had encountered in a while. He'd need to check on his rookery brother Sept later today. He'd been critically injured three days ago.

He shook himself again. Too heavy thoughts before stone sleep made for nightmares. He rounded the last corner to the cafeteria.

"Oof!"

A young girl fell flat on her butt as she bumped into Ragnarok. She was a slight little thing. He immediately recognized her as Sheila Ra'ul, one of the newest recruits to the Corps. He sighed. She was a slight little thing with her fair hair, gray eyes, and freckles.

"I'm sorry," she said cheerfully as he hefted her back to her feet, "I wasn't paying--woah! Oh! Hey, Rag!" That was her pet name for him. "You're pretty quiet for a giant! Didn't even see you!"

He grinned. "Hrmm," he said in his rumbly voice, "that may be because your head was in the clouds, hmm?"

She blushed slightly, but laughed. "Ya got me!" she said happily.

"So..." he said, "what's the hurry."

"Well..." she began, "I was gonna get something to eat, but I forgot my tech-band so I was running to go get it."

"Forgetful as always," he said amused. "Be more careful, little one. I'd hate for you to get injured."

She made a face. "You know I hate it when you call me that..." she whined. "And it's hardly a fair estimate considering that everyone is a 'little one' to you."

He chuckled. "I concede," he said.

"You just get off shift?" she asked sniffing the air, to which he nodded. "Thought so! You smell like decompression! You off to the HC?"

He shook his head. "Food first."

Her eyes lit up. "Ooh! I'll join you when I get back!" She took off like a shot.

"You shouldn't--oh well." That one didn't lack for energy, but her forgetfulness worried him. It would be sad if she were to come to harm--there was little room for error when dealing with the folk.

He chuckled. Let her enjoy her enthusiasm. Time and experience would temper it in time. He walked on and entered the cafeteria.

Another energetic individual was finishing cleaning the floors as he walked in. Jack was always moving about in the kitchens. He wondered briefly how he and Sheila would get along. An image of half the colony blowing up entered his mind, bringing a grin to his face. Exaggerated, but not far off.

He heard the boy talking and chuckled his deep rumble. "One should be glad your assessment of food is better than your assessment of bots."

Jack hears a deep, rumbling voice and looks up immediately with a big grin rising up on his face, stretching from ear to ear.  His eyes brighten as he runs from around the counters towards the tables and next to the breakfast trays where food waited in warm plates to be grabbed to be devoured.

He pulls off his apron, moving it behind is back and stretching it behind him, end to end between his thumb and palm as he stretches his arms out to imitate wings before flexing his thin, little arms and curling his four fingers forward to imitate the massive claws of the gargoyle. His voice rises up with greeting as he pretends to fly towards the great beast with energy.

"Woaah!! Ragno, the Fierce Warrior!!" Jack calls in excitement. "How ya doin'?! I haven't spoken with you in days!"

Ragnarok blinked in surprise as nimble Jack sped around the cafeteria. Finally, he burst out laughing. The image in his mind of he and Sheila now had the whole planet exploding.

"Days is an exaggeration, Jack of the Kitchens," he said with mirth. "A day and a half at the most. It is good that you are so full of energy." He sniffed the air. "So...what is on the menu for this morning...?"

"I'm sooooo glad that you asked, big man."  Jack says with his remaining grin as he ties his apron back on in a disheveled fashion.  "For the breakfast set, we have eggs, bacon, sausage, soups, my famous breakfast pasta that comes with extra bacon and beefy goodness!   OH.  And I tried to make this really good stuff--"

"DUDE."  Beth says, coming forward with a sultry saunter as her shoulders straighten up in a militaristic manner.  "The breakfast counta is righ' here.  He can smell dat shit.  Quit ramblin' and let him grab some grub."

"Oh.  Right."  Jack said, facepalming and moving aside so that 'Ragno' could snag a plate for himself and take a pick of the various hot plates that offered foods of many varieties.  "My apologies.  Didn't mean to folk it."

Beth rolls her eyes at the childish expression.  All the younger kids were using that phrase for their new slang.  "To folk something" was to mess things up, tear it to shreds, and so on, just as the Folk do.  She shakes her head, placing her hand on Jack's shoulder and steering him towards the clean plates, too.

"You shoul' eat, yoself, Jack.  I know you wanna prepare the next meals already, butchu need a break.  You been cookin' all mornin' so share a meal wit him while the caf's empty, eh?"  Beth says calmly after she nods her head in greeting to Ragnarok.

Ragnarok watched in quiet amusement at the two's exchange. He liked lively people, even though he wasn't one. He had trouble keeping up with them, sometimes, but he enjoyed their energy. When Beth had finished chastizing the young man and spoke to Ragnarok, he smiled and nodded. "Thank you."

He walked over to the plates and grabbed himself a large plate and loaded it. He walked over to the tables and carefully placed himself in a chair--he hated to just throw his weight around. Once seated and a napkin in his lap, he grabbed his fork and knife and tore into his food with a will. Good as always.

Jack follows suit and grabs a little food after Ragno does. He was ready to argue, of course, but he saw Beth's face and when Beth makes that face, you do not argue unless you want to be in a lot of pain. The woman's dangerous.

He pulls up a chair opposite of the gargoyle and begins to each much more neatly, but he doesn't seem to notice or care about the gargoyle's fast eating habits, either. He is well used to it, that's for sure. In between bites, he starts to mumble about how there is nothing wrong with doing a good cleaning to the area by yourself without relying on bots to do the work for you.

Ragnarok's ears twitched and he chuckled at the boy's words. He finished his plate and thought about what to say.

"It's not to say an organic can't do what a bot could," he said evenly, "but to do so takes more time. The convenience of bots is that it frees up more time for the organics to focus their attention on other things that bots can't do. Like cook. Sure, a bot could follow a recipe, but it would be generic and lack the full flavor only a living being can give it because they can taste." He grimaced slightly, worried he'd come across as preachy.

Jack shrugs carelessly as he begins to scarf down more food, willing to let that discussing come to a close. After all, there was not a point to arguing when you could just agree to disagree. He's almost finished with his plate, anyway, so he'll need to get up and get back to lunch prep soon.

"Anyway, hope you like yer breakfast." Jack says cheerily with food in his mouth. More people begin to show up and grab plates of food of their own.

As Ragnarok finished the last of his food, he nodded. "Indeed it was," he said. He took the boy's earlier silence as polite disagreement. Oh well, we all had our quirks. Besides, there were things he enjoyed doing himself that bots could've easily done for him. "Thank you for the company."

His plate emptied, he downed his beverage and took them to the recepticle to be recycled. He yawned and stretched his massive arms. Sleep was calling.

He left the cafeteria, only to once more be bombarded by Sheila. Her face fell. "Awwwww! You're done already?!"

"Soldiers have to eat fast, little one," he said with a grin.

She made a face at him, then beamed. "No problems there!" she said.

His grin deepened. "Without needing the heimlich," he added.

Her face fell and became a deep red. "You're never gonna let me live that down, are you...?"

He said nothing, only smiled and ruffled her hair. She batted at his hand.

"Stop that!" she said poutily. "You make me feel like I'm two."

He looked at her with a look that said, "You're not?" Her resulting glare was intimidating.

"Oh, go sleep, rocks for brains," she said.

He chuckled and gave a small bow. "As you wish," he said.

She made a face. "Hey!" Before he could finish turning around, she had wrapped her arms around his torso in a hug. "Sweet dreams, eh?" she said, pulling away and not looking at him. She broke back into a smile. "Later!" She turned and sped off into the cafeteria.

Ragnarok blinked, then laughed. Quicksilver, that one. He could never keep up with her. He turned and made his way to the Hibernation Chambers.

Pitch Space Empty Re: Pitch Space

Post by JerriLeah7 12th September 2013, 6:26 pm

Jack stood there with silent awkward.  Not awkward silence.    Silent awkward.   That's how he phrased it in his mind.  He's not in the cafeteria anymore, but boy, does he wish he were.  He sits on the small cot, his clammy hands wound tight within each other as he looks down at them.   He can't bear to look at her any longer.  It hurts too much.  He was in his room, singing loudly and off key...but then she showed up and the mood changed with just two words.

She's leaning up against the wall with her perfect, pale complexion looking far less lovely due to her tears and her expression of anguish.  Her auburn hair is haphazardly shoved into a bun on her head, ends sticking out here and there.   It's quite a mess, but Jack thinks that it suits her rather well.   The simple worker's clothing she wears is also quite suiting in his opinion, because for some reason...for some reason, she is quite elegant enough on her own.  If she wore elegant clothing, his brain would probably explode.  Or this shitty planet would.  Whichever.

Her hands are trembling, those thin fingers are trembling.  He looks up and watches them shake as she wipes her tears with them before brushing them dry against her pants.  Her back slides down the wall as she reaches the floor, sitting with a defeated posture as she leans forward to cradle her legs with her knees up against her chest and her face lowering to rest on them.  No sounds are coming from her any longer, just quiet angst, but Jack isn't sure which is worse.  This silence or those pained wails of agony?

Yep.  Silent awkward.  Jack doesn't know what to do or how to react.  He's not sure what to say--or if taking at all would be the stupidest thing that he could do right now.  Her expression says she's giving up and she needs comfort, but her posture says "don't touch me" and possibly "I hate the world."  What helps a person in their most desperate situation?  Does it not vary on the person?  How can he help his best friend?

Jack moves down on the floor in front of her, deciding to take a risk.  Sure, he could lose his head from this--all dangerous women can get you killed when they are in such emotional states--but she is worth the risk.  He places his fingers on her forearms, pulling them down and forcing her head up without any support.  She looks into Jack's eyes with such grief that it pulls at his heartstrings in the most delicate way possible.  He resists the emotion, keeping his face calm as he scoots up closer to her, wrapping his arms around her raised knees that blocked him passage before her.  Her gaze lowers to the floor, but then back up at his voice.

"Brigantia.  Look at me."  Jack speaks softly, saying her full name for the first time in a long time.  "I'm right here.  Not but two inches from you.  I'm right. Here."

The crying sounds again erupt, tears flowing freshly as Brigantia presses her sobs into his chest, her posture no longer closing herself off from the world.  Jack's hand moves to her head in an embrace, as if his hand were to move over his heart in some sort of prayer.  As she shakes and trembles in his arms, Jack closes his eyes as realization floods through his chest and as he feels more, now than ever, just how fragile she is.  He had never realized!  This is something that is so surprising, not just because of her amazing and strong personality, but also because of how sturdy she always seemed in heart and soul.

The most powerful woman Jack has ever known is crying in his arms and there is nothing he can do about it.  His eyes open, filled with anger and anguish and determination--anger towards something that, before today, was something he never had two thoughts about in his life.  Brigantia's father was murdered by the Folk just two hours ago.   Seventeen people killed in the last surprise attack.  He pushes her against him more tightly at the thought.

When she had crashed into his room, delivering her pain with raw solitude ("He's dead."), questions wracked through Jack's mind that he had never questioned before.  Will the demons ever get through?  Are they really a more serious threat than he had dared to consider?  Should he have been more involved?  Could he not have done something--anything, to have prevented this?  He sat idle.   Jack was idle, serving lunch to a few people while seventeen people fought with all they could to keep him ignorantly safe, taking all his security for granted and dying to show him the truth the hard way.

I didn't want to learn this way.   Jack places Brigantia's sleeping body on his own cot after some time, resting her there carefully enough so as not to wake her.  He exits his small room and makes preparations to have someone watch over her before he storms off to the one group of beings that he knows will help him change.  The gargoyles.

Pitch Space Empty Re: Pitch Space

The wind felt wonderful underneath his wings. The Earth was everything he had imagined and more. Below him lie the sea, the sun glinting off of it. And finally, he could truly spread his wings and fly. A giggle alerted him to his left. Corianna. His rookery sister.

"This is wonderful, Rok!" she exclaimed. "Come! Is that the fastest you're going to fly! Slowpoke!"

She flapped her wings powerfully and took off like a shot. He grinned. "You won't lose me that easily!"

He flapped his wings and was soon hitting speeds that made the sea and ground below them fall away at an amazing pace. He was gaining on her rapidly.

"Got you!" he exclaimed from above as he dove for her.

With a sudden burst, she sped up and free of his dive. Her speed was incredible! He took off after her, but she was too fast. Always so far away...

"Cori! Wait!" he called reaching out.

Inky blackness opened before her and she was heading right into it headlong. "Cori! Corianna!" Sounds were going off. It sounded like buzzers...

He awoke from stone sleep abruptly to the sound of buzzers. The solar implant was attuned with proximity and emergency detectors to undo stone sleep in an instant. The room was filled with collective groaning, his included. It was Wednesday. They tested the alarms on Wednesday. Unfortunately, the solar implant didn't recognize the difference between a true alarm and a test. He looked at his tech-band; two pm. So maybe six hours of sleep?

That would have to be enough. He wouldn't be pulling a full twenty-four hours without being a little tired, but after that dream he wasn't going back to bed, either. Corianna. It'd been a few years since he'd thought of his rookery sister. He'd harbored a crush, but sadly, she favored their rookery brother Galcian, who had been quite the looker. Ragnarok was many things, but he'd never be what was considered handsome. They'd joined and Galcian had had him as his witness. She had died in a geothermal mining mission and Galcian had been critically injured, as well, but he'd never been the same after her death. He went off on his own and was never seen again.

He shook himself. Dark roads. He didn't need to go down them. He left the HN to get some air.

Jack steps forward, finding that half the Gargoyles were finding their way out of the Hibernation Chambers.  He also notices that many are also being stopped--the ones that weren't woken from their sleep during the attack.  Ragnarok will be in there.   His fist tightens around the papers in his left hand, crinkling the smooth sheets with stress.   He is stopped at the entrance at first, but when he shows his papers, they let him through.

The briefing has begun.  All of the information of the losses and the attack...now all of the Gargoyles would know.  Now Ragnarok would know....and he knew Brigandia's father well, due to how long he's been in the Colony Military.  As the list of names is fed into their Tech Bands, Jack closes his eyes, unsure if he wishes to see their faces when they see those that have died.

After that bit of information is processed, they are ready to discuss the new information about the Folk when one looks up with interest at Jack's presence.  One of the Colony's head leaders, Tangris, didn't like to share too much information about the Folk around civilians, and Jack could understand why.  He nodded his head as they paused and many heads turned his way.

He moved his way around the Gargoyles to reach Rango, slapping the new recruiting information paperwork into his clawed hands and then apologizing for the interruption before leaving.  Then, he rushes away, ready to go find out what his new schedule will be.   He's not sure who will head the Cafeteria now, but he doesn't care.

As he left the room and headed down the corridor, his tech band beeping. Emergency information? He found a free spot and activated it. His eyes widened at the information. A surprise attack by the Folk? In the day?!

He pored over it. Why hadn't they woken him--ah. They only woke up the duty rosters first. If it had become a greater emergency, they might have. Still. He didn't like it. He should've been out fighting. He could volunteer to help with the current repairs. He sighed. Now to the butcher's bill...

He grimaced, knowing each name if for no other reason than that being around as long as he had meant he'd trained or trained with the people in question. Some civilians were lost. He knew them, too. Such a loss of life was always a waste. Those damn Folk. What did they want? What were their motives...?

He pulled back and sighed heavily as he saw a name that struck a chord. Geoffram Harrison. She had a daughter Brigantia that was good friends with the cafeteria head. Jack. Poor girl.

Another message came in on his mail server. He opened it to find it was from Rango. He sighed and shook his head. The "new recruits" list. During an attack, if there were heavy casualties like this, the corp got an influx of new recruits. Humans were always fairly hasty in their emotions when it came to this, thus a while back it had been decided recruiting would be done by the gargoyles.

Emergency repairs would have to wait. First, now, would be talking to the these "new recruits." Talking them down, more like. A few would be determined and he couldn't stop them, but at least a few could be brought to see that they might be being rash and to give it a little time.

An hour later, he'd made it through the fifteen kids determined to see their friend or loved one avenged. Out of them, he'd managed to talk nine into holding onto their conscription papers, four he'd outright talked out of it, and two of them who were sure of their decision. There was one more he needed to speak to.

"Jack," he said, greeting the boy gravely. "I've come to talk to you about your conscription papers."

Jack looks up from his work, suddenly losing focus. He is in the kitchens, cleaning up dishes by hand, despite the available bot in the corner, standing there watching him do it. He dries his hands and moves over to a table where Ragnarok is standing and takes a seat without any argument or comment. In fact, it's just a stony, empty face. Beth quickly signals at the bot as soon as he walks away, which begins to wash dishes quicly and efficiently on its own while Beth follows Jack at his heels.

He has no time to get any words out before she starts talking. "OH, yeeaah, Jacky, you gon' getchyo head set straight. You hear me? You are not dumpin' this heap o' shit in da kitchens on Lin--he's a horrible cook and a pervert. You got me? I ain' workin' fo him. Now you listen ta Ragnarok and you listen ta him good."

Ragnarok sat down. This was never his favorite assignment. People could be capricious and, in this emotional state, like wildfire. Jack's stony demeanor seemed to belie what he knew must be a torrent of emotions underneath--especially because the kid never had a stony face most times.

He collected his thoughts--it was never good to be hasty. "So, Rango informed me today that you're thinking of joining the service?" he opened. "Considering I've seen you plenty of times, I'd like to think I know a little of you to know that you had never shown any prior interest in joining, so would I be correct in assuming that the surprise attack might be the culprit? More specifically, did you or someone you care about lose someone...?"

Jack is already gesturing for Beth to move away, who rolls her eyes and walks away slowly, but sitting nearby where Jack cannot see her--within hearing distance. He looks down at the table as Ragnarok speaks, inquiring politely. Jack finds it ironic to see that the big guy is trying to talk him out of it when people are dying left and right and that everyone needs members.

"No one died that I really know or am attached to." Jack says coldly, but speaking the truth. "Just like anybody, it has affected me. We are dying, Ragno. I'm not gonna sit by and cook beans while people die out there. Not anymore."

Beth snorts. "We soldiers need ta eat good food to go out ta fight, foo!"

"Get lost, Beth." Jack says calmly without turning back towards here. "There are plenty of people in here that can cook well."

"What she says is correct, Jack," Ragnarok said after a moment of watching the exchange. "Just because you're not fighting doesn't mean you're not contributing. Speaking from experience, there's...a comfort in a home-cooked meal. It reminds you of what you're fighting for--a soldier can lose sight of that amid day in and day out of relentless fighting. Morale can make or break a troop. And I know many of my fellow corp who come into this cafeteria looking worn but have left looking refreshed.

"That would be you," he said, looking the boy in the eye. "I've seen you talk and joke with the crew. You keep morale up, and that's vastly more important than one more body out there."

"Yeah, yeah." Jack says, waving his hands about dismissively. "I get you. I also don't care. So I helped as a cook...but, I want to help differently, now. We need numbers, I'm offering one more. What's the problem?"

Ragnarok sighed. He thought for a moment. "Have you never wondered why gargoyles handle all of the recruiting?" he said. "It's because our longer lives help us to not be as...capricious...in our decision-making. We need more hands, yes, but we need hands that aren't being driven by a current emotion."

He took a deep breath. "And in your case...this has something to do with Brigantia's father, Commander Harrison? Am I correct...?"

Jack crosses his arms, a slight, bitter smirk rising up on his cheek as he looks at Ragno with hard eyes. He doesn't say anything for a bit, keeping his thoughts to himself as he considers. The room goes silent, and even the cooks and their assistants fall silent and inactive, listening with curiosity.

"Partially." Jack finally admits, breaking the silence. "I am angry for Brigantia. I am hurt for her, and I have witnessed her anguish personally. However...I'm also now painfully aware of my ignorance.

"Even as a civilian, it is wise to keep up with our conditions--our men's efforts and what they do to keep us safe. I never even thought of the Folk and what it is that they do to people when they attack. I didn't even wonder what they look like." Jack looks a bit more angry, now, but he pauses, looking about at the others that were still in the room with him.

"I put food in people's bellies." Jack says now, his voice rising as he turns back to Ragnarok, with dark, determined eyes. "Now I want to ensure that our people have food and a home to get back to. I helped in one way...but, now, I am ready to help in a different way.

"I want to never see that anguish in another person's face. The only way to make that happen is to get rid of the Folk entirely. So, that's what we can make our goal towards. I will be one more man in the effort to make our fears and our problems fade until we have the next problem in this colony. Let me help you, Ragno."

Ragnarok was silent as he watched the boy's anger. He could understand it. He had felt blood rage and despair upon learning of Corianna's death all those years ago.

Finally, he sighed and opened his Tech band. The monitor arose and he displayed it for young Jack. "Give it at least a day," he told the boy, showing him his conscription papers were in the system. "I normally tell them a week, but you don't look like you're willing to accept that. If by tomorrow you still feel this way, then go here where your conscription lies and hit send."

He stood. "If you decide to join, then we look forward to having you," he said, looking at him soberly. His face hardened uncharacteristically suddenly. "But know this. Soldiering is hell and a thankless job. There will be cold nights, cold sweats as you relive battles--the Folk inches from your face with their feral eyes ready to rip you apart, the sights and sounds of your teammates being ripped and hacked apart by those unholy abominations. I've seen it break people, I would hope the same doesn't happen to you. Good day, Jack."

Ragnarok turned and left. He hoped the boy wouldn't be too hotblooded. He hoped.

Jack nods his head before moving back towards the kitchens. He still has a meal to prepare for today. Beth glares at him as we walks, and he completely ignores her. She clenches her hands into fists, her glare growing more intense--if that's even possible. Once again--the woman is large, dangerous, black, and crazy...she'll probably kill him in his sleep.

He groans. "Look, I'll still be a part-time cook. 'Kay?"

"Part-time, my ass." Beth groans, slamming some dishes into the sink and almost breaking them from anger. "I'm not eating his cooking, you brat. Not for your little Vendetta."

Jack sighs.

Ragnarok went to the Gardens. His nightmares had left him with the need to see something relieving and some "fresh air" as the expression went. The begonias were always relaxing to look at.

"Rag...?"

He turned to see Sheila looking at him in surprise. "What are you doing out here?"

Ragnarok smiled. "I sometimes like to come out here to appreciate the flowers. Is something wrong...?" She was looking at him funny.

"I...I don't know," she said with a smirk. "I just didn't see you as the type...?" He cocked an eyebrow and she looked sheepish. "Sorry..."

He chuckled. "I'm not offended," he said. "But you should strive to look beyond what appears to be 'obvious,' little one."

She made a face. "I hate when you call me that..." she grumbled. Her expression softened. "Are you okay?" He blinked and looked at her curiously. "Well, when I first saw you, you looked so...heavy."

He broke into a smile. "Nothing I can't handle, Sheila," he said, "but thank you for caring."

Her face looked concerned, but she bit it back and smiled instead. "I know what you need! Some company!" She looked nervous. "That is, if'n ya don't mind...?"

He smiled again and nodded. "Flowers shouldn't be for one person alone," he answered.
