Three Kingdoms Role-Play Empty Three Kingdoms Role-Play

Post by JerriLeah7 28th November 2011, 7:15 pm

Three Kingdoms, Brynom, Inlantria, and Aandrin, are all in alliance with each other, sworn to aid each other at all costs in any event that one should find itself at war with another Kindom outside of their region. They are all located next to each other in a large, circular edge of the continent, named Arzworn, in the world of Carid. They actively trade, work, and support each other in all needs and never ask for assistance outside of this region.

It is the the season of winter, where lakes freeze, the ocean is wild from the icy winds, and the snow conquers the deadened land. It is currently dark, the sun long resting, but still long yet to rise. As the snow begins to touch the earth with gentle caresses, Mica watches and waits patiently for the right moment to enter through the portal.

She dreads moving from her warm palace into this dreadful, white, and bitter contrast, but it must be done. She can only enter, hope to be welcomed into the Three Kingdoms, and find the ones that she seeks with such fervor. Only they can stop what has already come to pass--so into the past she walks, deeply hoping that the ignorant will become learned and listen with wise ears.

As the cold, desperate air bites at her skin and the snow begins to dampen her clothes immediately, she shivers from the feeling of her history. The land around her is so empty--so dark, it's almost as if Arzworn knows what future calls to it and it is calling out to be freed, saved. She looks around her in sorrow, missing the scenery as it had been. It is truly beautiful here, nothing like the blackened and fiery place that it has become in her time.

She shakes her head, pushing away the memories and the sadness, reminding herself that she hasn't the time for soft kindness to the heart or any other sort of sentimentality. All that can be done is to find them all, one by one, and make them see the truth of their mistakes. The first target: Tatren.

Tatren is busy leading a hunting group through the forest. They have just shot a deer and he is helping them track it. He hopes they will leave him the hide. He can use it for some extra clothing. He spots some blood and moves ahead. He follows the blood trail and up ahead he sees the trophy, a nice 20 point buck lies motionless. He motions to the group behind him.

"See I told you he will find it, he is the best money can buy." One of the hunter says to the other.

"Not much for conversation is he?"

"As long as he shows us the best game who cares!"

Tatren shakes his head approaching the deer. He takes out his dagger and starts to clean the deer as the guys chatter.

Kilika walked through the streets of Inlantria. It was so cold and dark out that not many other people were out there, but she had her heavy coat on and the lack of people was fine with her. As she walked along she glanced at the ground from time to time, seeing if there were any victims of the cold - rats, dogs, anything really - that she could study.

Cold and death went hand-in-hand. It killed creatures, it drove people inside and killed towns, dead bodies were cold... So much for her to ponder!

"Alright, boys, let's bring her in!"

Sirrah stood at the helm of her ship, the Leanne, watching the harbor come into view as if rising from the depths of the sea. She spun the wheel, turning her vessel towards the harbor as her men struggled with the sails. The wind was especially harsh today, and the Leanne responded in kind, bucking like a horse when Sirrah turned her to shore.

To be honest, Sirrah felt the same as her ship. It was far too early to head in to port, in her mind - it was always to early to head to port. But they needed supplies, and the men were getting restless, and so it was with great reluctance that she had turned back towards Aandrin and solid ground.

[ATTN: Tatren]

As Mica walks along the wilderness in the cold, finally adapting efficiently with the bitter emotions of the land around her, she places her mace on her back and puts her dark, wet hair up into a bun. Though it will make her neck even more cold, she cannot help but keep it from her face. Her vision mustn't be interfered with.

At last, she finally sees him in the distance. The first of her targets is knelt down, working at the corpse of a woodland creature, as other men are behind him a ways, chattering away carelessly. She wonders if she should wait until he is alone, but she decides that she does not have the time. Her eyes glow, a red ring around them for just moment, and then dissipate, returning to their normal azure color.

With the word of her magic, the man will now be able to see her, hear her, sense her. The other men behind him, however, will not recognize her existence, for they are not worthy. Although, this man is not worthy, yet, either, but he will be. He will be.

She makes an approach, non-hostile in her posture, making no move to take her weapon. She remains at a distance, however, close enough that he will see her, but far away enough that the man, Tatren, will have to approach her in order to speak with her. Surely a woman with such odd appearance and strange scars will take his attention.

[ATTN: Kilika]

In the darkened streets of the City, Lalinda sits at the curb quietly, wishing there were street torches neerby. It is far too dark for her liking near home, but life is generally too dark on its own, anyhow. She is munching loudly on an apple when she hears footsteps echoing in the distance. She hardly has to look up to know who is gaining on her.

"Kilika, out again? You really should try having a normal resting time, dear heart." Lalinda says quietly, "Or perhaps you simply hate the sun's greeting. Either way, such cold nights can make you sick."

[ATTN: Sirrah]

As the ship made its way towards the dock, Aaron looks out and watches as the Leanne makes it way towards him. He stands still, shivering from the cold, as the ocean spray bites at his face. He had complained about the snow when exiting the warmth of his home...he is now regretting those words. The ocean water is far more gruesome than the forgiving touch of the snowfall.

As she reaches port, the anchor falls and he immediately begins giving out orders to assist the familiar ship into its home. He hopes the Captain is more forgiving, today. Perhaps the weather hasn't soured her mood...then again, just being on land could do that. If he is lucky, however, this will be a quick and easy docking.

Tatren is busy with the kill when he senses another being in the distance. Wait...There wasn't anything there earlier. He senses a twinge of magic in the air. He looks up in the distance seeing a figure in the distance. Well the being will just have to wait, he is busy gutting his deer. The sooner he is done with this the faster the group will be on their way.

He looks back at the group chattering away. He rolls his eyes the...Tatren tries the think of the correct word to describe them...useless beings probably don't even notice the figure in the distance.

Tatren smells the air, the figure does not smell like the ones from the group of so called hunters he is with. He looks at the figure. "I sense you...you will wait until I am done." He calls out in a rough manner, but not threateningly as he continues to work on the deer.

Three Kingdoms Role-Play Empty Re: Three Kingdoms Role-Play

Post by Guest 29th November 2011, 6:43 am

{Attn- Open}

Witack woke stirringly on one side of Tuesday's bed, his ears listenened for howling winds and the lack of animals in the land outside. He found the day not yet begun, keeping in accordance with its routines but the days were now shorter with less day and more night.
Eventually, he lifted himself out of the bed and before he could shiver from the cold, Witack slipped into his clothes and adorned a warm coat. He strolled as he always did, with pride in every step, towards the fireplace where a fire was gently burning. Above the embers, he kept trophies and hand-drawn portraits of his ancestors. Whispering quiet words, he prayed to them and kissed his half-closed fist and sealing the prayer by pressing his kiss to his forehead.
With that, one of his servant-slaves approached him. He felt her presence in his back and without turning he spoke.

'Get me a cup of tea.' Witack ordered and he expected the girl to at least bow so as to backchannel his request.

He continued to watch his ancestors while his tea brewed in his absence. Soon, the servant returned and only this time, he turned to face her and retrieve his tea from her hands. He sipped it slowly.
The servant watched the floor before her, waiting for her next command and as Witack drank, he thought of no other command. But then, there was a knock on a door some distance away. Someone had come to visit his quiet abode. This time, the servant only watched him further. Realising this, he spoke once more.

'Well, go on.' Gesturing to the door as if he was dismissing one of his guards.

[ATTN: Tatren]

Mica says nothing, hearing the hard tone of the man before her. She looks around again, seeing the snow covered pines and the rough fallen pine cones still sitting above some of the snow in certain areas near them.

She moves over to her right, bending down to pick up a pine cone at her foot, and standing straight again. Her eyes narrow, she breathes heavily, trying most arduously not to be impatient. Perhaps she should leave this one and return to him later?

No. He might speak of her presence to others, though it is highly unlikely. She knows everything about Tatren--she has studied him for months. She is aware of all that he did in his past, all that he has ever held dear to his heart. He has no love for others, which benefits her in so many ways.

So, she waits, though she hasn't been ordered around since she was...twelve? No, thirteen. Ah, the life of royalty brought to rule far too soon. Still, she managed, and look at her now! Here to save a world that is already long lost. Her mind wanders off, remembering the day when she was forced into ruling an entire Kingdom, but her eyes still remain focused on her target and on the men with him.

After he had called out to her, the men begin to look confused, eyebrows raising and suspicious glares are cast around them. When their eyes have wandered through her repeatedly and find no results from their searches, they seem to be questioning the hunter's good judgement of his surroundings. Whatever doubts they have, however, they aren't voicing, which just might be a wise decision.

[ATTN: Witack]

As Tuesday felt him rise from the bed, she remains still, ever quiet. She hopes to take some fashion of his kindness with her today, should he leave her. She dreads his absence on such cold days, but a merchant does what he does--travels.

When knocking is heard in the distance, she sits up, curious. Her eyes dart to her husband, still adjusted to the dim room, and then back towards the door. She opens her mouth to speak, but hesitates. Then, she slowly lifts herself from the bed and moves towards him with ease, beginning to rub his shoulders from behind. She almost jumps nervously as the translucent curtain over the window touches her ankle, her face pales.

She isn't used to having a window in her room, for Witack had only just recently had her room switched with Friday's so that all of their rooms would be in the appropriate order. Friday is his newest bride, a brash, hard-headed girl, in Tuesday's opinion. Still, kicks the curtain away, her heart still racing, and continues to rub his shoulders.

"You are up earlier than usual, love. Did Wednesday call for you again? Nightmares?" Tuesday inquires softly, a bit of jealousy in her voice, though she tries to hide it.

Witack was first tense when hands touched his shoulders but the gentleness of the fingers indicated the loving touch of Tuesday who had just left the bed. The tension in his muscles caused his arms to ache under her massaging hands; after awhile, the pain eased into peacefulness. Tuesday had a similar voice to Thursday's but hers had a more velvety feeling with it.

Hearing her words, he thought of what to say. Since before she had woken, he only thought about the realm and the other two kingdoms. Inlantria, who purchases guards for some of their magic-users. Aandrin, the city that loans few of its navy ships as part of Brynom's trade routes ever since snow turned to ice on the roads and horses would not be able to carry their load across it.

But he felt as though his time was diminishing and he felt the great need to search for an heir among Brynom who will take his place. If assassins do come, he will not have put up much of a fight since Witack is no warrior. He is a merchant and has respect, power and wealth, enough to keep the bounty hunters away. Or he may choose to offer a bounty hunter a reward higher than that of their previous client, in order to manipulate a hand that will do my bidding for me while I remain away from risk.

His mind returned towards his wife and he replied thus;

'My dear wife, winter has arrived and there is much work to be done.'

He only said as he turned to caress his wife's lips before he exited his room and strode onto the banister overlooking the entrance to his home. He must see who has come to him.

Kilika stopped when she heard the voice and the sound of an apple crunching; at first she was confused as she had been deep in thought, but then she recognized it as Lalinda and walked over toward her.

"Hey, I'll have you know this is good thinking weather," she replied. "And what are you doing out here? Shouldn't you be worried about getting sick too?"

As she stood there she continued to scan the ground nonchalantly.

Tatren finishes with the deer. He strings it up in a tree. He approaches the group. "Stay, I will clean up."

He takes the innards in a sack and walks over to the woman. On the way he sets the sack down and wipes his knife in the snow. He dries it off on a old rag he always carries on him. He keeps an eye on the being as he approaches watching her carefully. The being looks human, but nothing like he has ever seen before. The build is completely different, having a different overall shape. It cannot be a son of one of the members of his group. He has seen males of all ages and none looked like that.

Tatren watches the being shiver as he gets closer. He takes off his outer hide, "Here." He simply states holding it out. He doesn't say anything else waiting for the being to talk.

"Kind as always, maiden. I am always out this late, as I must wait for my husband to come home from the mountains. I hear rumors that his patrol comes in tonight for a good rest before heading out again and I don't wish for another night without him.

Perhaps you would know...is there indeed a patrol coming in tonight?"

The lady stood up, beginning to pace slowly to keep warm, tightening the robe and shawl around her shoulders as the air from her mouth can be seen from the heat against the cold. She shivers again, dropping her apple onto the ground and then scooping to grab it hastily. It falls, however, into the gutter and slips into the sewers beneath the city.

[ATTN: Tatren]

Mica smiles, accepting the hid gracefully, but saying nothing at first. She analyzes him, shocked at his sudden kindness. Through all her studying, she hadn't expected such a kind gesture from a stranger the man didn't even know.

Then, she looks back towards the other men, her head lifting slightly, to be sure that the men wouldn't interfere.

"Tatren's your name." Mica says, deciding to begin with facts, "Mica is mine. Would you tarry a little and hear a story of mine? I assure you, it has good purpose."

Tatren stands there, but doesn't say anything. He doesn't feel he has to, if he hadn't decided to hear her out he would have just walked away. He crosses his arms and nods wondering how the being knew his name. Maybe it has been spying on him. This particular group is quite chatty.

He is not afraid of the being, knowing he can take it if necessary. His chains and weapons are quick and he has taken down larger creatures than it.

Swinging his staff, Brandt hit a man in the stomach. He then leapt back and swung his staff at another man’s head. He only had a few more thieves to finish off now. He looked over to see the merchant he was protecting and as expected the man was cowering in a corner. At least the man was out of the way.

Brandt kept fighting the small group of petty thieves, moving as fast as he could. With each swing of his staff, he would land a solid blow. One by one the thieves either ran away or were knocked unconscious. With only one remaining, Brandt tripped the man with his staff and then pinned him on the ground. “Now…tell your buddies to go make an honest living for once.” With that, he let the man run away.

Brandt walked over to the merchant to make sure he was all right. “That should be all of them. I believe the caravan you are joining is just beyond that gate.” The merchant stumbled as he got up and nodded in agreement . “Well then, I suppose that this is the end of my service.” Brandt held out his hand waiting for his fee. The merchant gave Brandt his payment and then walked outside the gate to meet with a group of travelers. Brandt turned around and started to walk down a dimly lit street of Inlantria. That job had taken longer than he had expected.

"Uh, I don't know. I haven't heard anything," Kilika replied. She then thought a moment and said, "I hope he comes back soon."

That kind of thing didn't interest her, so even if she had heard it somewhere it would have quickly been forgotten. There were much more important things for her to think about than when some people were coming back.

As the woman dropped the apple, Kilika found herself thinking about how she'd once kept various fruits around until they rotted to see what it was like for them to die.

The Leanne finally floated to a halt in the docks, but Sirrah couldn't rest yet. She found herself racing around the ship, shouting out orders of her own to her men as they worked with the docking crew to secure her great ship. The wind and the waves shoved at the Leanne, struggling to free her.

She caught sight of a familiar face among the docking crew. "Aaron!" she yelled out. "Stop hanging back there and give us working men a hand!" She smirked at him, spray flying in her face, as she grabbed a line to start furling the sails. If anything, the foul weather seemed exhilarating - at least, it was as long as she was still on the Leanne. Having to deal with poor weather as well as solid ground would be a different matter entirely.

The moon shined bright illuminating the town square. Aelfrica was wearing a colorful wool dress that flowed around her as she danced around the frozen water fountain. A statue of the goddess posed beautiful with what normally would be running water pouring from her mouth. However the water was frozen from the area at her mouth all the way to the circular base that held the water around the statue. The water inside it was frozen as well. Aelfrica danced like she had never danced before. Each step she took landed beautifully as the music played in the background.

Flutes drums and all other assorted instruments played beautifully and only seemed to enhance her dancing. A bonfire was lit not far from where she was dancing and made her shadow look alive and was dancing with her. Sweat beaded from her forehead as she twirled around using a fan to help enhance the dance. The music ended and the dancing stopped as well. Panting, Aelfrica bowed down to the crowd that was clapping and giving yells of appreciation. She smiled as she bowed down. Yells of encore could be heard. How could she tell them no when dancing was her life? The Winter solstice festival was well underway as Aelfrica went back to dancing.

Frica as she was otherwise known as was a graceful and serene dancer. She was a pale woman and usually wore clothes that blended in with her. However when she danced she used brightly colored clothing and kept clothes specifically for dances. She sang as well sometimes dancing and singing all at once. Many loved her for these occasions.

{Attn: Tuesday}

Witack waited at the banister but none came to face him save for the servant who only said quietly.

'It was nothing, sir.'

{Attn: Frica}

He breathed in deeply and retraced his steps back into Tuesday's bedroom where she now lay once again sleeping. He shot a glance at his beautiful wife before he walked to the window and as the silk curtains curled around his ankles and the wind gently touched his feet, he gazed at a bonfire being lit at the town square and cheering was heard.

Witack made his way casually down his long, twisting staircase and towards the door. As soon as he had exited his home, one of his household guards strode behind him for his own protection. Once he had noticed this, he subtly dismissed the guard back to guarding his home.

'That won't be necessary.' Witack had told him in the form of an order of dismissal.

He was wearing his long coat and before he left, had pulled on a soft white tunic and some leather slacks, shielded in the protective cover of his coat. His condition was rushed and spontaneous, so he had not enough time to get himself ready lest he missed the bonfire dance.

When he had gotten there, one dance had finished and the encores began. Dancers moving with the same grace with which they walked, their bodies made into silhouettes by the bonfire behind them. Now they were only shadows moving to the music.

(ATTN : Open)

Filling up some paperwork that needed to be processed, Kameron was in his dad office, feeling the chill feeling of the outside. It would be once more quite a cold day and he wasn't hasty about going outside. Although he did needed to go see how the citizens were doing, it was part of his duties as a lord, but that wasn't something he felt comfortable to be.

With a move almost too sudden, he get up as it was now the time to go do a little bit of training.

''Is there something wrong, Lord Kameron ? '' His dad advisor asked in concern.

''No there isn't I'm just going for some training. I am done with the papers.'' Kameron replied with a serious tone.

''Alright, if your highness say so.'' The advisor said with a small smile.

''Do you have doubts in your lord, Igton?'' Kameron said on a serious tone, not finding his remark funny at all.

''Of course not, my Lord.'' Igton replied.

''Good. I'm leaving to the sparring hall, I shall make my leave afterward toward the city.'' Kameron said promptly as he left the room.

Advancing in his Lord robe or different tones of blue, he first went toward his room. Slaves and maids bowed to him as he made his way past them. Getting to his room it was spacious and of different blue colours, just like his lord robes. A few slave were cleaning his room at the moment and one of them stopped and smiled at him.

''Can I help you, my Lord ?'' The woman said, wondering why he came so soon to his room.

''I would like to have my room for a couple of minutes, you may continue your work here later.'' Kameron replied.

''As you wish, my Lord.'' She said leaving the room with the others.

Kameron sigh and as the door close back behind him, he start changing to some battle clothes. He wore some high class blue armor plate with high class battle clothing. Then as he was ready, he made his way toward the sparring all.

''Oh Kameron, you're coming for more pratice of your art of battle I see.'' The master said with a smile as he bow upon Kameron's arrival.

''Yes sir, let us spar together.'' Kameron said to his Master of arts.

''Very well, pick up your longspear. '' The master instructed to him.

Kameron instanly did so and with lessons given by his masters, they did some sparring for a good hour. When they were done, they both bow to each other and Kameron thank the master for today's session. After a few more preparations and some clothes change, he finally get to walking into the city with two guards following him.

The citizens were smilling as he passed by, asking how was his father. Trying to be professional though he lied by saying his father was just fine. Although he clearly knew he wasn't, since he had been poisonned recently. Many young girls were squealing and pointing him when he came by, almost screaming if he even dared to look at them. Although he didn't care about them much.

A pretty young man came to him and said ''My lord it's nice to meet y-'' Just then the guards stoped him from approaching any further. ''Hey relax... I just want to introduce myself.'' The young man said, smilling.

Kameron did a sign to the soldier it was okay and started to talk, even though he was a bit distracted by this men traits. He found him very attractive in fact. ''N-nice to meet you young man.'' Kameron replied looking a bit nervous, although it was more because he was shy to be in the company of a pretty guy like this.

''At least the lord is gentle ! Me and my wife have settled here just yesterday, I think it's a great city, plus we have this great view on the ocean.... So romantic don't you think ?'' The young man replied with much exitement in his voice.

Kameron looked a bit shocked that the young man heart was already taken, but it had to be expected. ''Yeah, very romantic... If you excuse me I got some work to do now''' He said in a casual serious voice.

''Weird... '' The young man thought out loud to himself as he go back toward his home.

Kameron on the other hand, thought he would walk back toward the mansion. His messengers who were researching for ressources about the poison would have been back at this time and he couldn't help, but wonder if they found anything.

The Sister wove between the buildings of the streets of Inlantria, never leaving the shadows. It was a quiet night, and probably wouldn't yield much.

She did this nearly every night, spending a week or two in a kingdom before moving on to the next. She listened for any indications of a potential client, be it through gossip or the person himself or herself expressing the desire to have someone killed. However, in addition to that, the Sister also listened for any sign of 'that man'. Ever since the day he blinded her, she has been unable determine his location. If he were to pass through a town, people would talk about it.

The Sister heard a few people walking through the streets, but as she moved around she could hear a conversation taking place. She got a bit closer and focused on it, but the two women didn't seem to have any useful information so far. The Sister stayed still and continued to listen.

Frica continued moving gracefully around the bonfire. As the music ended she serenely ended the dance with the fan covering her face. She had seen a man walk from a house moving quickly to where the bonfire was. She smiled as she bowed offers of Encore going around again. She was still panting and chose not to do another dance.

"No my kind people! I am surely tired from all the dancing I have done this evening. Please allow other dancers to dance their sweet magic over you. However don't forget me, not in dance nor in soul. I will gladly take the dance for you again sometime!" she said as she stepped away. Other dancers took her place as they danced beautify however not with the same serene and gracefulness as she had. Drinks were being handed around and she took one smiling as she walked over to the new comer.

"Good evening Sir. I saw you walk from I assume your house to where we were celebrating the festival. I hope you enjoyed the dance." she said smiling.

{Frica}

Witack watched the dance towards its climax, the dancers all being called upon by the crowd for more encores. They all looked supremely tired as each other but when the main dancer which all the crowd watched, departed; the others decided to carry with much less dream-like dancing.

But while Witack continued to watch them perform, the dancer herself had visited him and hearing her speak, he matched her smile with his own.

'Good evening, madam. Was I that inconspicuous? Nevertheless, the festival so far has been very endearing as well as entertaining.'

He replied, shifting his gaze back to the bonfire. After a moment, he turned back to the dancer and this time, he could see her features. One side of her face was completely illuminated by the orange glows the flames cast around the square. He smiled again for politeness and tried to firm his words.

'So, what do people call you?'

He asked, attempting to keep his balance. He only just noticed that the intensity of the bonfire had melted the snow and winter was entirely absent from this part of the town. For the first time in days, Witack felt warm again.

Witack Open

Frica smiled warmly as she took a sip from her mug. She turned to watch the dancers dancing and smiled. Facing the gentleman in front of her again, she introduced herself.

My name is Aelfrica Anwin. However please call me Frica. That is what everyone else calls me." She said warmly. "Now whom do I have the privilege of speaking with?"

The fire had melted the snow in the square and good cheers and laughter was was noted through everyone that was still in the square. Music was evident and food and drink was in much evident as well.

"I hope I have not intruded upon you this night." she said. She looked up and could see the moon and stars. It had been a while since the night had been this clear since snow had visited them for the past week.

Witack began to rehearse her entire name, so as not to forget it because he felt he would require it soon. He stared at her while she spoke, memorising her behaviour and the way she spoke. She asked him his name and he gladly gave it to her.

'It's a pleasure, Frica, to make your acquaintance. My name is Witack von Erdtantz, or Witack.' He smiled as he spoke to her.

He followed her gaze to the moon and for once, the sky and the stars were vividly visible. The moon, however, provided the most light save for the bonfire and in a couple of hours or so, the sun will rise and conceal itself behind clouds. Winter is, indeed, here but in this town square, winter seemed like a legend.

His attention the returned to Frica again an he spoke once more.

'My home is located atop that small hill, overlooking the town. If you ever need assistance, please do not hesitate to ask me.'

He raised his hand and pointed a finger at his home which, in the darkness, was just visible. He let his hand float into one of the pockets of his coat.

'No, you haven't been intruding but like all men, I must return to my home, I have much work to be done and people to converse with in a business-like fashion.
Like I said, it has been a pleasure watching you dance and talking with you but I must take my leave. Or would you like to join me in my routinely rounds?'

[Attn: Open]

"I should gut him like a pig!"

Rebecca sighed and laid a calming hand on the man. "If you did, I'd do everything in my power to save him, which would potentially exhaust me if you cleaved this young man stem to stern. Would you really do that to the woman who helped your ailing wife get better?"

The man, Roger Clemmens, was of formidable size and as a butcher knew how to work that knife he was holding. He was in his normal attire, the day being long over, of brown breeches and a blue wool shirt to combat against the dreadful cold. He towered head and shoulders above Rebecca, but she had never been intimidated by size.

Roger sputtered in frustrated indignation. "But this man--this man...!"

"Tried to steal from you, yes," she said, nodding agreement. "And look at him, he's barely clothed and looks like he's missed a meal or two."

The butcher looked at the thief, now actually seeing that it was a mere boy of 13 or 14. His rage abated.

"Well," he said deflated, "I guess...the authorities."

The boy paled and shook his head fiercely. "Please, sir! Me mum doesn't have the money to bail me out! It'd break her!"

"Should've thought of that before you tried to steal from me, eh boy?" said the butcher coldly.

"But we can barely afford to eat and I have two little sisters!" the boy protested.

"Is this the sob story you usually tell people to let you off?"

"Sir!" said the boy, now positively crying. "Please!"

"That's enough, Roger," said Rebecca. "Now young man, if what you say is true, wouldn't you be better served working instead of running the streets and stealing."

"I tried that, mum," he said. "But gents like him take one look at me and kick me out!"

"As well they sh--"

Roger cut off at a sharp look from Rebecca. She turned her eyes on him.

"Be that as it may," she said, "stealing is wrong and the Goddess would not like one of her children demeaning himself."

"But what would you have me do, mum?" the boy asked.

"Well, for starters," she said thinking on the fly, "you can work as an assistant to Master Clemmens, here."

"What?!" Roger exclaimed.

"You have been complaining about needing some help around the shop," Rebecca reminded him. "And he's of a proper age for it."

"He'll rob me blind!" Roger protested.

Rebecca eyed the boy and shook her head with a knowing smirk. "I doubt he'd do that. What's your name, son?"

"Jimmy, mum," he said respectfully, nodding his head. "Jimmy Norwells."

Rebecca smiled. "Manners," she said, "I like that. You remember those manners and I'll be looking in on you from time to time, Master Norwells."

"Yes, mum."

"And if your mom needs help with that ailment of hers, tell her to come to my home."

"How'd you--"

Rebecca smiled. "Never mind that," she said kindly. "Now, do you know the corner of Barrow and Baker's?" The boy nodded. "Good. That's where you'll find me, I run a small medicine shop there. I charge reasonable rates, so don't be afraid to come see me."

The boy nodded. Roger harrumphed but shrank when Rebecca looked at him with a raised eyebrow.

"Uh, c'mon, boy," he said gruffly. "We should, uh, show you where you'll be working. Is that the only pair of clothes you've got."

The boy looked dejected. At this, the butcher grimaced in guilt. "We'll have to see about that, then, can't have you working in that."

"I don't need handouts, sir," the boy said pridefully.

"Says the boy who tried to cut my purse," Roger retorted. "Don't worry, I'll take it out of your salary. Now, c'mon--"

"Mistress Pendrik!"

Rebecca turned as a young girl ran up to her completely out of breath. She wore a brown woolen dress that went to her ankles with her hair tied in a bun and rosy cheeks and bright gray eyes. She recognized her as Stellar Tremalking. "Dear child," she said, "what could possibly be the matter?"

"It's Trixie Maddox, mum!" she exclaimed.

Recognition dawned in her eyes. The Tremalkings lived right next door to the Maddoxes, who were expecting their first child; the mother-to-be was having a hard pregnancy.

"Say no more, child," answered Rebecca. "Let us be off." She looked back to the young man. "Good luck. And may the Goddess bless you both."

She quickly made away with the young Tremalking in tow.
